I've just noticed that the Masters degree in Applied Linguistics which I'm about to start is called an "M.Phil" (Masters of Philosophy?) rather than an M.A.

Is this fact likely to attract attention and would it negatively affect my chances of getting a job which requires an M.A?

I would say it looks better ! If you ever decide to escape from this TEFL world an M.Phil might look better.

Which university ? Galway ? Trinity ?

My accent?

This is getting weird! When did you hear me speak? Or does my accent come across in writing?

An MPhil is typically given to those that fail a PhD. In addition, some old style UK unis (such as, for example, Cambridge) still offer MPhil degrees as a 'bridge' between MAs and PhDs. Other unis simply do not offer MAs, only MPhils. Don't worry about the 'Phil' part; it has NOTHING to do with philosophy! It's just an old convention, such as when you do a mathematics degree at Oxford and still get awarded a BA (arts!).
