Ever heard of mad Swedes? Well, there are mad Finns too. Seriously, I think Finland is an impressive country, and you can get bored anywhere, including Cambodia. Where are you mate? |

Yes I have seen some of thiose mad Finns in action.
The recipe I suggest is :
Take one or more male Finns. Add an inderminate amount of alcohol. Reture and watch the fireworks. |

Your chance of finding ESL work in Suomi are practically nil. They have too many competent people there who know much more about the English language especially from a grammatical point of view than us.
English teaching in all Scandinavian countries is very effective because the result is that the vast majority of school leavers speak basically fluent English. This is in contrast to Southern European countries and France where the level attained is much lower.
We could all learn something about Scandinavian countries. For example all the t.v. programs from English speaking countries are never dubbed and this means that children quickly become accustomed to the language from a very young age. The constant exposure to the English language means that most Finns and other Scandinavians (Dutch as well) are basically bilingual and often trilingual as well. |

A few years back I attended the IATEFL conference in Edinburgh. There were a group of Swedish teachers of English amongst the people at the conference. They had a better standard of spoken and written English than many of the "native speakers" attending the conference. |

It's not just the teachers. I always remember many years ago my Dad telling me about an airline working group where they were discussing standard on-board announcements. The Scandinavians were fully at home discussing which modals to be used leaving the native speakers floundering.
In Gothenburg once I got on a bus to go to the airport. The bus driver got on, gabbled at the few passengers; one got off and me and one other sat there looking blank. The driver seamlessly switched to perfect English 'This bus doesn't go to the airport....
Not just the teachers.... |

Years ago when I lived in St. Petersberg, Russia, I remember seeing the cruise ships from Finland. They would dock at St. Petersberg, but only a couple Finish tourists would get off. The rest would stay on board getting plastered.
BTW, any weblinks to pictures of Finland and fins? |

It's the same with the ferries to Stockholm and Tallinn - practically no one gets off, unless they've booked a hotel. The whole point of going is to get cheap booze, and that's on the ship.
But, contrary to what was said above, Finns aren't normally 'wild' when they're drunk. It's just the state some get in that's such an embarrassment to everyone. |
