5.9 quake n' bake. Enough to get your hair tingling, but no damage.

What's next I wonder...Popcatepetl? Maybe a tsunami.

Is it just me...

...or does anyone else think the "Rejected students" (should we call them disgruntaled dummies?) protests are just way over the line of reason?

what is special about september 1? is it a state of the union address or something? a friend told me they have tanks ready in tha palacio nacional in case things get ugly. hopefully things won't get that bad, although it seems like things will have to get much worse before they ever get better.

yesterday i was in a taxi with a friend and the driver was going on and on about AMLO. he explained to my friend that the reason there is only one hour of mexican history taught per week in schools is that the mexican education system is based on the US education system, and that it was a part of the US plot to keep mexicans ignorant so they couldn't have a real democracy (limiting histroy class to one hour a week). he backed this up saying "the US is a nation of immigrants so clearly it has no history and you can't expect a nation of immigrants to have a history, so they want us to be the same way." it was one of the stranger taxi rides i've had in a while. when we got out he shouted "sigue luchando por la democracia joven!"
anyway, add that to my list of reasons i love mexico city.

Yes, to your question about September 1st.

Quote:
Despite the tension surrounding the transition to a presumed, new Caldern administration, President Fox intends to go ahead and deliver his annual - and last - State of the Union speech on September 1. Two weeks later, he'll take part in Independence Day festivities, which will include his reenactment of the famous grito (shout for freedom) that launched Mexico's independence movement in 1810.

It should all be very interesting in the Zocalo in September and we wonder where this could possibly end (peacefully that is).

This is basically true, only you need to change US to PRI!! Laughing Around here kids spend more than one hour a week on history, but it's only revolution to 2000 history and most of it is memorization of "great speaches" made by various PRI politicians.

LS, in Mexico City there have been additional marches and protests by "student groups" who are disgruntled that they didn't get admited to UNAM and the Metropolitana. I also hear a report that in Oaxaca City, some APPO (Assemblea Popular de Pueblo de Oaxaca) militants tried to pass themselves off as UABJO rejects and sacked the Rectoria of the UABJO. But that was on our local radio station that has obvious PANista sympathies.

Wasn't this also related to AMLO's platform? Promising an elimination of entrance exams and giving all students a passing grade on participation? That might only be rumour, like having tanks in the Zocalo (!!!).

Fox's State of the Union address takes place at Congress, by the way, and not in the Zocalo. It will be a big bust, I'm sure, as an outgoing president will have nothing more to say than good night and good luck to whoever succeeds him.

woooooooooooo! Indiana, represent

I made a mistake, the tanks aren't in the Palacion Nacional. that would be pretty zany, wouldn't it? but I don't remember the name of the building where they're being kept. this is all hearsay anyway.

i'm leaving in 12 hours so i'm going to miss all the fun. off to the bank right now to make a fat wire transfer back to the states.
