Unfortunately, discrimination laws are not the same in China as in western countries. Being of Spanish decent, I had to endure things growing up (as a kid) in the 60's in the USA which were really hurtful.
Even taking the TEFL course from Via Lingua, in Corinth, Greece, they expressed that anybody of color would be discriminated against in Europe. There is something wrong here......
It is not fair, but a fact of life in other countries than in the US and Canada. I guess all we can do is respect our fellow human beings and wish for the best.
Too bad racisism is still alive and well. NOT A GOOD THING!!!!!
Cheers! |

I've been helping a friend who owns a Korean hagwon in Beijing. I've sent him 4 teachers already, 2 of which stayed for a year. the other two ---very good people and good friends -- i guess got lazy or something and left. i know the saying is that if you're white, you get a job in china, but how can people not take commitments seriously?
--you don't really need to answer my questions, i just needed to get that off my chest in a public forum-- |
Read the China forums for a bit and try to understand why anyone wants to stay in China. |

| Recruit better teachers - such as Singaporeans, Indians, Filippinos. You get them with excellent track records, good educational backgrounds, and, above all, a dedication to work and a loyalty hardly any white face will ever offer! I swear I am not making this up! |
one of the teachers i sent this guy was Indonesian, but spoke English like a native speaker. she stayed until he fired her (because he found someone white for the job). she stayed the longest and was by far the best teacher there. however, she wasn't white. he blamed it on the parents wanting white teachers for their spoiled kids. |
It is clear this guy doesn't deserve any GOOD teachers, white or not |

I fail to understand why an employer cannot choose who he wants to hire and for how long he wants to employ them..in retrospect..the same goes towards employees ..there is no mandate that someone should stay a specific length of time..except for a contract..which is an instrument for controlling agreements..but unless the instrument accounts for human nature..it is an instrument of indenture service and not an agreement..
If some has a preference for white or for that matter any other color teacher..why does that mean they don't deserve good employees..after all they should have the right to choose their own behavior..and policies as to their business...as a matter of rights..we as teachers have no right to lecture anyone as to preferences ..
In St. Peters burg Florida. There was a night club which was known for its black patronage and white employees...he prefers white over black for service employees ..a manager who knew his market and realized that folks who had in their mind suffered from oppression would patronize an establishment that catered to blacks by providing whites in service positions that had beforehand been the entry level of blacks for the service industry with little previous employment or skills...some blacks felt shortchanges thinkin that a black biz leader..should be providing jobs for black youth..but instead he chose the market to provide him with a criteria for choosing an employee..
Was he wrong or just a smart black entrepreneur.. |
