Hi,

I'm just curious about the first day of class. I have been thinking of what I'd like to do on the first day of class. So, I'd like to know how some of you handled your first day teaching multi-level adults. And, I'd particularly like to hear from the female teachers.

Thanks in advance.

If you're teaching male students, not too many show up on the first day, or even the first week for that matter. That's been my experience.

I expect that she will be teaching female students, and if it is like the rest of the Gulf, the women don't show up much either. Pretty much the first week is a complete waste... and then will come Ramadhan just around the corner.

I'd do the usual 'getting to know each other' time wasters that are usually used on the first days of language classes...

Expect total chaos, usually in the form of 50% more students than predicted. Be sure to make a lot of extra photo copies of any handouts. Don't give out books in the first week, the will vanish with the students who only come for a week or two. then you'll find them casually toosed out in the parking lot.

From my experience, the first week of most EFL classes are usually not very productive because student attendance is usually incomplete. However, the teacher can use this week to get to know his/her students and if you are in a foreign country, it is a great week to get to know the cultural aspects of your students.
