Delpha, the quotes I received today did convince me that I have to go as light as possible! But as it is not easy for me to store my belongings somehwere for a couple of years I will either have to part with things or take them with me.
Sold half the house already and decided to transfer my music collection to a portable harddisk so I don't have to take 100's of CDs with me
Still, after the "going-light-session" I estimate that there will be 100-200kg left that I need to get to Turkey somehow. |
Suggestion: I'm coming over to Turkey as soon as the stupid visa ever gets finalized. I checked with Turkish airlines and they allow 2 bags at 70kg each and each additional bag at 70kg costs $85.00. I was going to ship but after hearing all the stories about customs and shipping costs, it appears paying excess baggage is the best route. Other airlines don't allow as much free baggage in terms of weight.
At least this way you can walk your stuff thru customs and most likely you won't be bothered. I have traveled to IST many times before with excess baggage at least 3 sometimes 4 and they never bother me. This time I'm planning on bringing at least 5 pieces. If you have your work visa this would surely be acceptable.
I think it also depends on what your bringing. It sounds like mostly clothing and some personal things. This should be fine. |

With regards bringing a mobile phone into the country. My advice is don't.
My Mother came two months ago with belated birthday presents. One of which was a brand new motorola phone.
I inserted my Turkcell sim card and for 6 weeks all was all and hunkey dorey. Then last Saturday for no reason it just would not work, just a message saying "sim card unregistered".
I telephoned Turkcell, who I must say were very good. However they explained to me, that to use my phone I must get all the documentation for my phone from England including receipts and prove of where the phone was bought with a singature stating who sold it to me!!
Then when this arrives I must go to my local customs house, which for me is Antalya airport. Then pay a fixed sum. After getting a form from the customs office I must then send all the details to some place in Ankara (again with a sum of money) .
The girl at Turkcell said it should not take more then 6 weeks!!.
As my phone is my lifeline for work I had no option but to buy a new phone here and register it straightaway.
I can fully understand why they do it, to stop phone theft, but God what a pain in the proverbial! |
