Hello there, I would like someone with experience and knowledge about Sohar, Oman to give me some feedback please.
Is 625OMR salary + 165OMR housing allowance + 75OMR travelling per month a reasonalbe amount for a person to live on? Has the housing situation improved since last summer as per the discussion in the forum. I would appreciate all information possible on this topic, and also please let me know what is a reasonalbe or good amount of salary + benefits for one to accept.
Thank you.

It took me awhile to figure out that you had left out spaces for what should have been 625 OR... I was trying to figure out what 6250 MRs were...
It is impossible for us to tell you if that is a reasonable salary without knowing your education and experience. If you have only a BA + CELTA (or other recognized CERT) and very little related experience (such as only a couple years teaching conversation in Asia), it is probably about correct.
If you have an MA and significant (5+ years) exerience teaching academic English reading and writing to Arabic speakers, it would be an insult.

Thank you VS, I appreciate your feedback. Sorry I confused you I note your correction. I am not sure of the exact qualifications. I asked this question on-be-half of a friend. However, I am sure your answer will help her make the correct decision.

This seems to be a bit sub-par to me, even for a BA. The average entry-level package should be around OR 800 if accommodation is provided. And may I add that Sohar and Muscat are the only places where this is really a proposition due to high rent prices. In smaller towns, rent shouldn't pass RO 100 per month. |

The last salary lists that I saw here of SQU - which is one of the higher pays - gave 800 - 950 OR plus benefits for MA, so BA would have to be less than that??
I seem to recall that it was 650-800 for BAs plus the standard benefits. I think they still provide furnished housing for most.
Moving up the scale was based on years of experience.

Thank you all for the replies. My friend has a BA and she is a certified teacer in ESL. She has been teaching for a few years. She loves teaching and also she wants the opportunity to travel, as such this gives her both, at the same time she does not want to be cheated on. She will accept the standard starting salary + benefits for Sohar. I am getting the impression that 650 OR is too low. Salary anywhere between 700-800 should be acceptable.
Once again thank you for the feedback |

This answer may be a bit late, but we only arrived back in Oman last night!
I think most MoHE non-contractual staff are getting about 750 OMR for BA, plus housing, medicals and travel, some of which is extra.
Being here depends on what a person comes to Oman for really. If it is for money, pure and simple, go elsewhere. To absorb and be part of the Omani experience, not wanting to check their bank balance monthly, welcome and enjoy Oman, it's people and places.
