|
|
I am looking ahead as I want to teach abroad next fall. I have my BA, but I think I should get certification to teach a second language. I am a little confused about the best way to go about it. I have searched online and it looks like it will cost between $1500 and $3000. Is this right? What is a good certification to get? Where is a good place to do it? I live in Southern California and am not seeing many places to get it here. Is travelling abroad to a certification center a good way to do it? What is the cheapest way (not online)?

Don't get a certificate online, unless your students will be virtual ones. Look for something that is at least 100 hours long with a teaching practicum in it.
I got the CELTA and highly recommend it. It is a great introduction to teaching, is very challenging and widely known around the world. I found that in N.A. it isn't as well known because it it British based.
Here are some CELTA Centres in the U.S. There are some in San Diego and San Fran, they'll be the closest ones for you.

Where is a good place (not too pricey) abroad that I could get CELTA certification? |

It all depends on what you mean by "pricey." I'm just coming to the end of a course at International House in Madrid. It set me back 1200 (about 1200 USD), and in my opinion it's worth every centimo. There are cheaper alternatives out there, but are they worth the money? At least IH test your ability before offering you a place. |

If you go to Bangkok, you can do the course at ECC Thailand for only $1400US. Relative to other locations, this is a great deal for doing the CELTA, but it will still cost you a fair chunk of change. The investment is worth it, though, as the course is challenging and you learn a lot in 4 weeks.

If you want to take the CELTA somewhere warm, friendly, and considerably cheaper than Europe (cost of living-wise anyway), take it in Costa Rica.
When it comes to TEFL courses I think you get what you pay for, period. So if you're serious about teaching and want to pursue a career in it, the CELTA is the way to go. |
