Quote:
A former American school teacher said Thursday he was with JonBenet Ramsey when she was killed in Colorado, and called the six-year-old's death an accident, a stunning admission that should help answer 10 years of questions in the unsolved murder case.

"I am so very sorry for what happened to JonBenet," he told The Associated Press.

John Mark Karr, 41, will be taken within the week to Colorado, where he will face charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping and child sexual assault, Ann Hurst of the Department of Homeland Security told a news conference in Bangkok.

"I was with JonBenet when she died," Karr told reporters afterward, visibly nervous and stuttering as he spoke. "Her death was an accident."

Asked if he was innocent of the crime, Karr said: "No."

Later, as he was escorted to his guest-house to pick up his belongings, he told AP: "I am so very sorry for what happened to JonBenet. It's very important for me that everyone knows that I love her very much, that her death was unintentional, that it was an accident."

Asked what happened when JonBenet died, he said: "It would take several hours to describe that. It's a very involved series of events that would involve a lot of time. It's very painful for me to talk about it."

Karr had left the United States in 2001, and thanks to his former employment as a school teacher, was easily able to obtain work as an English Teacher in Malaysia and Indonesia. He had arrived in Thailand, June 6, 2006, and worked as an ``English Consultant`` for different companies in Bangkok. He also briefly worked as a ``DOS`` (Director of studies) at one language school in Bangkok, according to reports from an unnamed source.

It is rather scary to think that Karr was able to get away with his crime for as long as he did, and it is of concern to think that he was in contact with other teachers and students during his five years in Asia.

The teaching population in Asia is a very transient one, and people should be on their guard with whom they fraternize, because associating with people, like Karr, could be troublesome.

This is hardly worthy of mentioning on the Thailand forum let alone the Turkey forum.

A lise where I worked along with another teacher who was well known to be partial to young girls was reported to the principal for fraternising inappropriately and the principal's response was to tell the teacher in question to stay at least a metre away from any girl.

Karr had worked only two weeks at the exclusive "Christian College Elementary school" in Bangkok, Thailand, before being fired from that school, for reasons given that he (Karr) was 'too strict' with the students.

Karr had made a good impression at the interview for the job (Bangkok Christian Elementary school) and his previous experience and references helped him obtain that job....his last before being arrested a few days ago.

A foreign teacher on CNN reported that Karr came accross as a loner who preferred to do things his own way. The Principal of the school mentioned that Karr preferred to have a class of grade 1-3 students, and insisted on working without an Assistant (a rare occurence in Asia). A traveller at the guest house where Karr stayed at in Bangkok reported that Karr was a loner and kept to himself.

Karr, a slight, rather frail, but young looking 41 years old, appeared with Bangkok law officials and the F.B.I. in a televised interview, with Karr expressing his regret at losing the child he ''loved so much."

Karr told law officials that his relationship with the 6 year old was a 'love affair' and that her death was 'accidental.' His statements about his relationship with a 6 year old were bizarre, to say the least.

In other reports, Karr professed his understanding and admiration for Michael Jackson.

Karr will be flown back to the U.S. for justice to take its' course, and only time will tell whether his claims are true, and whether he really is the killer of the unfortunate child in question.

Ghost is not convinced that Karr actually killed the girl, and believes that Karr suffers from a kind of delusional fantasy.

The more one learns about Karr, the more one is puzzled and baffled by his behaviour and attitude.

Karr left Bangkok today (August 20, 2006) accompanied by a huge crew of Thai police, F.B.I. agents, reporters and onlookers. Despite all this, Karr appeared to be in good spirits, and even held a toast to his 'hosts' (the F.B.I. agents) on board the Bangkok to Los Angeles flight - strange behaviour for someone (Karr) who faces very serious charges (murder and abduction of a child) which might see him face a life sentence.....

All this gives one (ghost) the impression that Karr might not be the man who actually killed the unfortunate child.

The fact that Karr made a good impression as a teacher in many of the places he taught at, also suggests that 'outward appearance/mask' that teachers give to others often does not reveal the true inner self. But then again, the best teachers, one often thinks, are merely 'actors' and this is what makes them successful in their chosen profession.

JonBenet Ramsey murder suspect expelled, reportedly visited sex-change clinic
1 hour, 27 minutes ago

By Joceyln Gecker

ABOARD THAI AIRWAYS TO LOS ANGELES (AP) - John Mark Karr, the suspect in the death of six-year-old JonBenet Ramsey, sipped champagne and ate fried king prawns in business class Sunday after being put aboard a flight to Los Angeles to face charges in the United States.

As Karr wined and dined in style and chatted with the three U.S. officials escorting him, another bombshell emerged: Reports that Karr sought treatment at a Thai sex-change clinic.

His Thai Airways International flight took off about 8 p.m. (9 a.m. EDT) for the 15-hour flight to Los Angeles. Karr's journey will eventually end in Boulder, Colo., where he is expected to face charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping and child sexual assault in connection with the young beauty queen's 1996 killing.

Karr was not handcuffed while being whisked through Don Muang International Airport in Bangkok. At the departure gate, he talked amiably with fellow passengers.

The 41-year-old teacher sat in a business class window seat next to Mark Spray, an investigator with the Boulder District Attorney's office. A U.S. Embassy official and an agent with "Homeland Security" on his T-shirt were also part of the escort party.

Before takeoff, Karr took a glass of champagne from a flight attendant and clinked glasses with Spray, who sipped orange juice.

Dinner on board, served on a starched white tablecloth with silverware, was one many passengers would envy. Karr started with a pate, then had a green salad with walnut dressing. The main course was fried king prawn with steamed rice and broccoli. Karr drank a beer, crushing the can with his hands when it was empty, then moved on to a glass of French chardonnay with his main course.

The suspect was relaxed, smiling and chatting non-stop with the U.S. officials next to him - until the television news crews on the flight turned their cameras on. Then he stopped smiling, clutched the armrests of his seat and stared at his lap.

Just hours before Karr's departure, a doctor at a seedy but popular clinic in downtown Bangkok specializing in sex-change surgery said Karr had come in for treatment.

"He was one of my patients," Dr. Thep Vechavisit of the Pratunam Polyclinic said. He refused to provide further details.

Another employee at the clinic, who spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to speak to the media, said Karr had talked with the doctor about a sex-change operation. This could not be confirmed by other sources.

Bangkok, where Karr lived on and off for two years, is regarded as a major global centre for sex-change operations. The Pratunam clinic advertises sex-change surgery for about $1,800 Cdn - a bargain compared to U.S. prices, where male-to-female reassignment surgery can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Dr. Thep has received considerable publicity for his male-to-female operations and the clinic is one of the sponsors of an annual beauty pageant for transsexuals in the seaside resort of Pattaya.

Karr appears to have been shadowed by gender issues since his early years, according to excerpts of e-mails published in the Rocky Mountain News that Karr wrote to University of Colorado journalism professor Michael Tracey.

Karr said his father was a "strong influence but rarely around," and responded to Tracey's question about whether his "fascination with little girls - which clearly has a strong erotic component - is a way of going back."

"Maybe I am not going back but have simply stayed consistent," Karr responded. "My peer group has not changed since I was a little boy, and girls were the people I was with always. Referring to them as a peer group is somewhat incorrect, but might also be the very definition of what they continue to be in my life."

Karr, once detained on charges of possessing child pornography, in recent years apparently travelled to Europe, Central America and Asia to search for teaching jobs. He taught in at least two Thai schools.

U.S. officials, the only ones to have actually interrogated Karr, have been silent about what he told them, citing his right to privacy and legal procedures. Second-hand accounts by Thai officials have been vague and contradictory.

There is little public evidence linking him to the crime, prompting some experts to speculate that he is either lying or delusional.

"Many high-publicity crimes have these people coming out of the woodwork," said Elizabeth Loftus, director of the Centre for Psychology and Law at the University of California-Irvine.

More and more strange!

He's a fraud and an attention seeker.

His father told The Denver Post that while Karr was in college as an adult, a professor encouraged him to write a book about the Ramsey case after being impressed with a school paper.

"He researched everything he could about her," Wexford Karr said.

One of Karr's former wives, Lara Karr, told KGO-TV in California that her ex-husband spent a lot of time studying the cases of Ramsey and Polly Klaas, who was abducted from her Petaluma, California, home and slain in 1993.

Lara Karr said she was with her former husband in Alabama at the time of JonBenet's killing and she does not believe he was involved in the homicide.

He moved his family to California and in 2001, Karr found work as substitute teacher. But that came to an abrupt end when Karr, then 36, was arrested on five misdemeanor counts of possession of child pornography, according to the Sonoma County sheriff's office.

Two days after Karr was arrested on the pornography charges, his wife filed for divorce.

That is not the story Karr's father, Wexford Karr, says he was told at the time.

In an interview Wednesday with The Denver Post from his home in Atlanta, he said his son, told him he was being held in California as part of the investigation of the Ramsey case.

Wexford Karr said his son's intrigue with the Ramsey murder was the start of his troubles. That fascination began with voracious research for a college paper that so impressed a professor that the man suggested he write a book, Wexford Karr said.

Karr is innocent of the crime of killing JonBenet, according to reports which state that none of his (Karr`s) DNA matched the DNA found at the crime scene.

Karr is now facing the justice system on charges of possession of child pornography and related things.

One has to feel sorry for Karr, but one is mystified why anyone would confess to a crime they did not commit. There has to be a screw loose in Karr somewhere.

If you go by appearance and demeanour, Karr never looked like a killer from day one, but his strange obsession with the case will be recorded forever, but ironically this whole case might benefit him (Karr) in the long run, with possibilities of further press coverage, books and documentaries in the pipeline for the future, with monetary gain for Karr if he sells himself to the media. Certainly one of the most bizarre cases....

You might want to use the word alleged the next time you want to be a reporter of exciting breaking news. Wink

tee hee... typical @ss covering speak.. alleged = we think he did it.... you think he did it... but we will use "alleged" to avoid any litigation for slander/defamation.

Another is... "Our current intention is.."... good for politicians.. if you don't deliver you haven't failed you've just had a rethink :0)

Or to protect an innocent person until he/she is convicted in court. There's nothing "tee hee" about using the word alleged in journalism. All reporters do it because it's the correct and ethical (not to mention legal) way to write about a "suspect." Rolling Eyes

now to put the cat amongst the pigeons.. if the consensus thought he was innocent it would not be newsworthy.. unless on a gross miscarriage of justice point of view... and introducing alleged into the sentence makes no difference to the average Joe Bloggs.. newspaper inches = no smoke without fire. On the original post subject i thought he looked like a sad loner and wouldn't have put it past him.. but that's media for you. The same individual could have been described as a cold calculating killer... and many people would have believed what they read.. based on appearance... regardless of whether the subject is clearly nuts or not. One thing to consider.. he said he did it, the authorities claimed he did it - so technically what is to be alleged... both accounts had the same conclusion?

Come on Mr C... all I was saying was that it wasn't fair to have a pop at Ghost.. He was just regurgitating news articles. I agree with your point about innocent until proven guilty. I was just saying that had an article used "alleged" it would be to cover the journalist's backside rather than for any altruistic reason.. and even if they did, the reader would draw their own conclusions from a shifty looking picture of the accused published alongside the article... oh and the fact the accused went to great lengths to set himself up as a suspect and claimed it was him that did it!
