Hello all, I'm trying to learn about the possibilities of teaching abroad I have a BS Ed w/lifetime certification in areas of elem ed, HS social studies, Jr HS math, a MA in public admin, and completed the major work for a BA in History, I have a few years teaching experience here in USA but found it unrewarding for a variety of reasons (school politics #1). Thinking it would be a good way to see/experience the world. I have no religious or political agendas and not too picky about location though really not so interested in Mid East (dosen't seem like a good place for american). I'm not expecting on making lots of money but don't want to end up a beggar on the street either so transportation and housing are equally as important. What other credentials will I need and the best way to obtain them? Spending a semester back at college isn't presently a possibility. Thank you for any imput
Best regards
Fred

How can teaching certifications be "lifetime"? I thought they had to be renewed every so often.

Yours is one of the general questions that is hard to answer. You don't express a desire for any specific country or climate, only that you would rather not go to the Middle East.

For what it's worth, I can tell you about Japan. You are qualified not only for the most basic of entry level work (conversation schools and JET programme www.jetprogramme.com ) but also for international schools (if those certifications are real and if you have a year or two of teaching under your belt).

Just be aware that "school politics" may be something you don't enjoy in the USA, but that it will probably exist in other countries as well -- and in a totally different cultural presentation and language.

thanks for the reply Glenski, the "lifetime" certification was what was granted by the state (MO) then they changed that in the late 80's to require continual professional development, in other words my certification is not revocable unless convicted of crime etc. the new certification have to keep going back to school or it expires (it really just builds the bureauracy and justifies a lot of administrative jobs) in reference to "politics" I meant that many schools emphasised sports and other activities that wasn't (in my opinion) going to help prepare students for life . . . a short fat white kid that's gonna be the next NBA star, it could happen I suppose everyone needs a dream, but it's not realistic and there's no backup plan. I should also mention that in addition to the public schools I taught ABE/GED in a prison and also taught in residential treatment facility for delinquent/troubled teens. I'm not looking for immediate position so I have time to be selective to find a school/country that would be a good match . . as mentioned earlier airfare and housing is as important as salary

You should take greater Europe off your list too, if you want airfare and housing.

China is not a bad place to start.. The salary is not high but if you are looking to rekindle a passion for teaching, a good university job can be very rewarding.

If you are unfamiliar with the job market call up the folks at journeyeast.org they offer free pre-trip consulting. (its who I came to China with )

Good luck
