Hi,

Does anyone know where one could find facts and figures related to the TEFL industry? I have been scouring the web for days and have very little to show for my efforts Confused Any links to websites with statistics would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

In response to my own query (!?), The British Council has published an interesting book entitled 'English Next'. An interesting read for all those involved in teaching English.

I hear Matt is a fountain of stats...

Why, he once told me that 34.7% of all TEFLers, once asked, admitted to having jaywalked at least once in their lives.

Interesting, hey? I tried to read it when it first came out, but I ended up with a nasty head injury when my brain exploded in about the 3rd paragraph...

I have a dear friend who not only has never jaywalked in her lifetime but she always goes to the street corner to make her way across the street.
She is an art teacher, though. Can`t include her in the 63% fold.

don't jaywalk in germany. 3 times out of 7 you will be ticketed.
a parallel statistic: 3 out of 7 ESL teachers are well-adjusted, fully functioning adults.

I think many times it's probably safer to jay-walk in the middle of a block than to cross at an intersection. For one thing, at intersections cars can zip around a corner and get you, while in the middle of a block, you have a decent chance to see them coming. Also, when there's a traffic police person directing traffic from the middle of an intersection, the hand signals aren't coordinated with the traffic lights. The cop motions drivers to go while the light signals drivers to stop and vice versa. Half the people watch the person directing traffic, the other half watch the traffic lights, and pedestrians are pretty much on their own to try to get across the street without becoming a hood ornament.

Isn't jay-walking the sort of thing that depends on the time and place? There are some places where it's perfectly fine to jay-walk, and other places where it isn't.

Speaking of crossing the street, has anyone seen the new cross walk lights in Oaxaca City? They have an animated person who looks to be running (not walking) and below that a count down of the number of seconds until the light changes to red. I remeber being indoctrinated as a child to never run while crossing the street. These lights are like they are saying "Correle!"

New lights in downtown Merida, too, but they aren't animated. Crying or Very sad Just a little stick figure of a person that changes colors and flashes ( Shocked ) when it's about to change. No countdown timer, but then people here know that if they don't move it right along, they're going to get caught in the middle of the street when the little stick figure flashes at them for about 3 seconds and then changes color.

Several intersections here got nice new signals, like Melee's Oaxaca ones, with a digital display timer telling you how long you have to cross, and an animated running green person. A novel way to distract people who dare crossing a street. Fine new hood ornaments the unsuspecting make.

Has anyone ever seen a Jay walk? What's the etymology?

<Well Guy, since you asked...> - wikipeople

Quote:
The word jaywalker is able to be traced back to 1917, though it may have been in use as early as 1900. It is generally considered to have originated in the United States, possibly from the city of Boston. It is a compound word of the words jay and walk; in this context, jay is used in the obsolete slang sense, referring to a stupid or dull person, or a rube, i.e. someone from a rural area and not familiar with "city ways". At the time, vehicles and traffic signals were a new concept, gaining popularity in the larger cities, so this term would have been used to describe newcomers who were unfamiliar with these recent developments and by extension, to ridicule people who behaved like newcomers but should have known better.

Cwc oughta have a ball drawing a TEFL parallel...

Shocked

I guess my whole TEFL career can be summed up as one big "jay walk" then. Sad

He was always a quiet and polite boy.....he should have known better. Laughing
