Hi, I have a question re: jobsearch in Tokyo, and I'd appreciate some (hopefully serious) advice...
A little bit about myself:
- I'm a British national with a BSc and CELTA.
- I live in Oji, just north of the centre of Tokyo.
- I have just a tourist visa.
- I'm keen to find a job that doesn't take up my weekends as I have commitments already.
- I'm available immediately, and would like full-time work with visa sponsorship.
- I am happy to teach all ages (I can play guitar and piano and have noticed a few postings saying this is a plus for teaching kids).
My question is:
- Which schools (or types of schools) do you think I should apply for (hopefully without too great a commute)? Actual names would be good, particularly ones which entail a 9-5, Monday-Friday attendance.
I've already posted this on 'Gaijinpot', but am keen to get as much information as possible.
Thanks in advance,
Sonic |

You seem pretty qualified, so maybe you can find a good-paying job, but ALT positions are pretty easy. They require you to work only on weekdays (~8-5pm, when classes are in session) and you rarely have weekend commitments, unless they have enkai's (drinking parties) or school functions, but you can still get out of those I believe.
ALT's teach anywhere from HS to Elem. schools, I'm sure your music playing skills would be a big plus. |

Given the OP's qualifications and desired working hours, an ALT position would be the most realistic option. However, the competition for the few direct hire positions is keen. With the second semester already having started, the OP's best bet now would be with one of the (justly) infamous dispatch companies.
A search for "dispatch company" on this forum will give the OP a number of names...and warnings. Good luck. |
