How much can you rake in, in US dollars per month, after having worked at an organization such as HESS? This is after tax. I'd preferrably like to know this by including all other expenses too, such as rent, food, utilities, etc.
They guarantee you 24 hours per week, at NT560, but the income tax thing messes me up. Besides, I have a tight budget and will possibly be coming there to teach at HESS in October, so I have to be sure. |

try to come at the end of December, so you can get through your 20% tax period during the first 6 months of next year, and use the cheaper tax rate during the last 6 months to balance everything out. |

hey there, I'm not understanding, is 20% tax directly in Taiwan, or is this for back in your home country? I came to Taiwan of course recently, but I haven't even stepped foot in my home country for 3 years. One school I asked said I'd be paying 10% tax of my pay (they would take it out). Does this sound right? |

Actually, Hess guarantees 20 hours per week, not 24. On that amount, you can make about NT$45,000 per month before tax, or about NT$35,800 with 20% tax deducted. Most people agree that standard living costs amount to something like NT$25,000 per month, depending on where you live in Taiwan. Note this doesn't include some of the more expensive regular entertainment options that some people like to indulge in, or one-off costs and purchases.
Also note that, if you are worried about your initial finances, Hess offers an interest-free startup loan to all new teachers - check out the Hess website for details. |

Thanks Atiff. That's what I was looking for, although I'd heard that at HESS they have a lot of extra hours other than the maximum given? |

most chain schools will have a large number of extra hours available thru either extra classes or subbing for other teachers within the organization...if you want safety in finding a job before you arrive in taiwan a chain school is usually a good place to look |

I'm feeling pretty positive about it and have been told the same, thanks. |
