I would love to hear from anyone who has taught or travelled in this area of Japan to tell me your experiences. I will be going in November for eighteen months and need to establish a social network of people with similiar employment to keep me sane. Please post any ideas on how to make friends, what to bring, or where to go once I am there. I will certainly appreciate your reply.  |

I'm in Yamaguchi prefecture now - been here for ages actually. I've lived in three different cities in this prefecture. Which city are you going to?
Depending on which city you are in and what your interests are it's really not a bad place to be. There are no really big cities in Yamaguchi prefecture and even Yamaguchi city (prefectural capital) is relatively small by Japanese standards. Tell me where you're going and what you're going to be doing and I might be able to give you some more helpful info. Certainly can give you info on places to go things to do once you get here. |

| My friend spent a year in Tokuyama and loved it. He immersed himself in the culture, had a lot of free time, lived cheap and saved quite a bit of money. |

| Thanks for the replies! I will be in Onoda teaching English and hopefully modern dance. I love the outdoors and recently read about people kayaking on the coast between Shimonoseki and Ube. There is also safe biking along the coast. I am originally from Florida and I love beaches and hiking. I thought about starting a English walking or cooking club to make friends. |

OK - Onoda - I haven't lived there so I can't give you any specific info on it except that I'm sure one good point will be that it will be much cheaper to live there than some other bgger cities like Shimonoseki.

Don't want to be a downer but I might as well warn you ......
If you're used to nice beaches in America, don't expect 'great' beaches in Japan will be the same. Compared to Australia where I grew up, the beaches in Yamaguchi-ken really suck.
I know some gaijin that organise a hiking group once a month out of Yamaguchi city (not so far from Onoda). So if you get here and think you'd be interested in that I'm sure I could put you in contact wth them. |
