This Alex Shulgin guy
|
I saw a documentary on him a few months ago. He lives somewhere in California with his wife and even now, into his sixties, is performing 'scientific' experiments with drugs. He uses himself and his wife as guinea pigs. They seem a very happy couple and still have a brilliant sex life. |

Alex the Dxck:
Alex, you are a loud mouth plebian. Have you thought for a minute that you perhaps don't know the particulars of my situation? Maybe I am renting from my grandmother? Maybe I have diplomatic status? Maybe the apartment is crap?
Do you even know what I do? No. Do I teach English? No. I used to. I am thinking of doing a few privates here and there. I am out here for other reasons.
Now, quit with your "unlikely" talk. Yes, it is unlikely but that does not mean something is not the case. My god, I just posted to show that you can get a good deal out there if you look. There are stipulations with my rental, but it is a great deal and is very nice. I am happy. |

If you're renting from your granny etc, why mention about getting it so cheap?
800zl is bizarrely cheap for a flat in the Starwka. In Warsaw, like anywhere else, you generally pay for what you get. I was looking for flats a year or so ago (with Polish partner who's a very sharp negotiator - born to haggle) and didn't find anything like that. And, yes, I have very good contacts.
We found one for much more than that, but it's expensive due to the area/size/quality etc. Still value for money. If anyone is looking for a cheap flat, they can do a lot worse than look on the east side of the river. And using an agent (it costs unfortunately) is the best way to find a flat that doesn't look like a murder scene.
By the way, and out of interest etc, what are the 'stipulations'? |

Why should the particulars of your situation affect the cost of renting apartments in general in Warsaw? You repeatedly state that all one has to do is to LOOK. Now when called on your claims you start talking about how your situation has an impact on the amount you pay, so you did more than just LOOK.
Alex the Dxck? Loud mouth plebeian? Such a charming turn of phrase you have. I guess that we can safely conclude that you are not working here as a diplomat. Are you renting from your grandmother? Unlikely based on what you said before I called bullsh*t, your exact words were You just have to LOOK, (advice you repeat in your most recent post). No matter how hard we look it is highly unlikely that most of us will find that our grandmother has a flat in the Old Town. And if you are renting from your grandmother then it just means that youre getting a gift from your family of 1500 PLN a month. Sorry but we cant and wont stick our hands out to our daddies to get some free cash. Is your flat crap? Cant be. You said that it is very nice and you have repeated that statement.

Well it is pretty clear that you are not a teacher. You go out drinking five nights a week. Teachers dont do that. Or at least do not do it for long. The ones who try it end up as warnings to us all within a semester. Or running a dodgy 'school' in Szczecin. |

You guys are jovial.
As Alex gets blue in the face, "It is unlikely I say, unlikely."
"What are the stipulations?"
"No way!"
"Freudling is a liar!"
"We are TEFL teachers dang it! We know the score out there! We are language professionals!"
If anybody wants a BRAND NEW, unlikely flat to rent, but the flat is about 20 minutes bus ride from the center, PM me. It will cost 1050 PLN. However, it is new and nice. I lived there for 7 months. It is about 50 sq m. (two rooms). Open design, lots of windows. Full security 24/7. Locked complex. Lots of stores around. Close to Geant. |

So you lived in a flat for 7 months before it was finished? You must have done. It is brand new now and you lived there for seven months.
Great score by the way. You must have superb contacts. All I could find in under 2 minutes was 50m2 Grochowska in a building built in 2005. The asking price is 1200PLN per month but with the 10% negotiation factor built in to property prices it comes to 1080PLN. 30PLN more a month but is only 8 minutes from the city centre. I wish I had contacts like you have.

| Hey Paul! Great area! Nice work. Grochowska is definately one of the nicest streets in Warsaw. The area you are in is very quaint and beautiful. |

| I think I forgot to mention that the flat comes with underground, locked parking (bike, car...). There are stores under the complex, cable tv included and a very nice, large patio with a view and a good size washing machine complete with a good size bathroom. |

I think this thread has gotten out of hand.
If you're looking for an affordable yet convenient flat, you will have to pay 1200 PLN. That should be 30% of your pay, so it's still OK.
Forget flats in Stare Miasto for 800 PLN, unless you have a grandma who can float you, and she isn't likely to do that unless you promiss not to have rave parties during Lent. |

| What hasnt really been covered - do these flats include "czynsz" in their price - the basic ground rent paid to the building freeholder for lighting and other services. This varies, but is a couple 200-300zl, depending on the apartment and how many people live there. |

Right here in the 'I don't live in the old town because the old town has shit transport links and is full of dumb-f*ck tourists p*ssing everybody off by clogging the place up so I live on tramstop away where I can park my car'-land we are paying 394 PLN for a 50m flat in a 1940's building (with the obvious renovations). Which would seem to suggest that the owner of the 65m flat which our learned friend is paying 800 PLN for is paying at least 25% (at least 500 PLN) more as their flat is 25% bigger and in a better location. Seeing as how czynsz is not variable I have never in my eleven years in Poland heard of czynsz being refered to as a bill. But maybe Warren's offspring means that he is paying 800 PLN plus 500 PLN czynsz. Which would still mean that he's ripping his granny off for half of the money which she should be getting by renting out her flat. Well done freundling! You're ripping Granny off for lots of cash! Now you have so much more to spend on the five nights a week that you spend out drinking daddy's money away! |

wow. I googled "gaydown" too, and still don't know what it is.
Anyway.... You all have been amazingly helpful, and I feel I have a firm grasp on the stress involved in finding a flat that is cheaper then the flat your friend found, and the anger that will arrise if you don't, as well as the incessant need to prove others wrong should you feel flat pricing has been misrepresented.
Honestly, I think I'll just go to France and be a nanny.
Good luck to you all. |

hi there,
don't be put off by these bickerings, i fear it is a symptom of dwelling in warsaw for too long which is regarded by most poles as the most unpleasant city in poland which doesn't repreresent the rest of the country anymore than washington of america or london of england.
there are many wonderful towns and cities in poland where you'll find warm and friendly people of every nationality who will be very interested in living with you and becoming more familiar with your foreign ways.
good luck with whatever you do.
