Two months ago I was asked to provide a photo to accompany my curriculum vitae. In all my years of teaching I have never been asked this, so I was a bit taken back.
Its not that Im not vain lol; I just think that if they need to know what I look like to pick me out of the crowd at the airport or train station, a school can ask me after they send me a signed contract.
Is this an unusual or usual practice with EFL schools nowadays? |

I know in Italy appearances are EVERYTHING but I was still surprised. I've been 6 years in italy teaching and I've never been asked before.
curious to know how common it is

It's not just Italy, it's worldwide. I automatically send a picture with my resume. I don't even wait to be asked anymore. |

I don't know if any of you looked at the ads in the newspapers in Italy. It used to tick me off too because as a requirement they had "bella presenza" = nice appearence. Now, I look alright, but still, what is that? That was then, when I lived in Florence. In retrospect, I think they really wanted to see that you look clean cut, normal, without nose rings or mohawks, etc. I am not one for appeareance because I am a student of Plato to a certain degree, but in Italy, they definitely want you to look "standard".
