Hello folks,

Have recently arrived in Manila, Philippines and am looking for work. Jobs in EFL seem thin on the ground here.

Has anyone got any recommendations where to look? Any contacts?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Howdy John,

Good question. Must be hard to get work teaching English in a country where everybody and his brother speaks it.

Good luck to you,

Try another country or do some serious networking.

You could try Berlitz:

Berlitz Language Center
2nd Floor Peninsula Court Building
Paseo de Roxas corner Makati Avenue
Makati City, Philippines 1126
[email protected]

or

Sykes Enterprises (call center)
19th Floor One San Miguel Condo,
corner Shaw Blvd.,One San Miguel Ave
Ortigas Center, Pasig City

(+63) 2 688 2998 local 8116

You could also ring Makati Language & Study Center

but I'm not 100% sure they're still in business:

109 Aguirre Street

Tel (+63) 2 816 2570

And here's a directory with a few more leads;

alphabetically arranged, 3 pages to check out.

Last but not least, have a look at

The Manila Times c/o JobsDB.com

Scroll down & click on Education.

What qualifications are you offering?

There are schools in Manilla offering online tutoring - do a search and you'll find them but the money is not what I'd call good.

Are you in a realistic position to contact universities?

Seriously, what sort of income are you looking for and what are you bringing to the party? Why should you get paid? What are you offering that Fillipinos can't get already? If you're looking to teach Koreans or Chinese etc then what are you offering that Filippino teachers aren't?

The Philippines has been through a lot but it does have English as an official language and has its higer ed courses taught in English so to get a decent job will require qualifications and references etc.

Good luck!

Manila is hardly a hotbed in the TEFL World. Most of the work is catering to Korean students and the pay is abysmal. Hardly worth the effort as there are other ways to make money in the Philippines. You might want to consider leaving to Thailand or Korea. If you are in Manila because your wife is there, she can easily accompany you to either place.
