After going to CR seven times, I am really for the possiblity of a more permanent move. I am a California Credentialed Teacher with twelve years of experience. I don't have a TEOSL cert., but I have CLAD cert. in my credential which certifies me to teach ESL to adults. I am assuming this will be acceptable?
I have been researching places to teach. Is it normal to teach on Saturdays? This would completely blow the weekend trips and keep me trapped in the San Jose area!
Also, I just arrived back "home" from a six week stay in CR. I went to Bocas del Toro and when I came back to CR they wanted to see my plane ticket out of the country before they stamped my passport. Is this a big concern if I stay longer than 90 days?
Thanks! |

When I left the country and went to Nicaragua, they sure didn't ask for my plane ticket out of the country when I came back in. Who carries their plane ticket around with them??
That said, the regulations are getting more tight in CR. Since you are certified, try going with an International School or the Lincoln School ... they might get you a work visa. |

Weekends are not required. It's up to you. If your school requires it then I'd look around at other places. There's plenty to choose from. Otherwise, I'd suggest a compromise. Work 1 or 2 a month at least to make them happy.
As for the work Visa and them requiring you to have a return ticket there are a few things you can do. Tell the customs guy you are busing to neighboring countrys w/ an unknown return date so they get the impression your leaving. Or, if your cornered by them buy a refundable return ticket there, make them happy and get it refunded later. But, it shouldn't come to that. I had no such questions asked when I got here. |

I work at a private institute in Heredia. We have to work Saturdays in 5 week rotations. 5 on 5 off. It isnt so bad because it allows one to save money and have some extra money for travel in the five weeks of no saturdays. We work from mon-thurs and then on the saturdays I mentioned above. It could get very expensive if one traveled every single weekend. I would not discount a place only because they make you work some saturdays. If you have to work all sats though that is another story. Good Luck, Ben |
