CJ, I'd like to reconsile with ya, but will that be possible? How shall we start?
I am gona stop poking at'cha, if you show some attempts of your own. First, shall be the restrains from some English words and the language that is rather abusing. I'll work on it myself
The above might be an example of how teaching in China can get to us but let's really get back to the lovely topic. Many of us in China have to deal with scores of issues and we are here to share them on, aren't we?
Teaching can be tough and teaching in China can be even tougher. The role of a foreign teacher in China is often mispercepted or shall I say abused. We are often exposed to job duties that have little to do with teaching. On the other hand, I must say that teaching can also be rewarding in China. Some Chinese students are just sooo exited to meet a foreign teacher, to practice English with him/her, to get to know other than Chinese culture, and so on and on. Some Chinese are pretty desperate to learn English and they'd do anything for it. Well, don't take the last sentence word by word really

I started this topic of some of the true facts to consider in China.
I thank the ones for writing the suggestions and advice.
Overall, i think (Wenzhou Zhejiang) isn't a good city from what a lot of us foreigners have experienced. I have only seen like 3 out of the 40 foreigners that i have met stay and continue teaching. It is a lot like Mexico here, there is not really a middle class. The very poor and the very rich which causes a lot of problems when dealing with foreigners for business. Too many empty promises and huge amount of RMB cheated on pay. Wenzhou has really given us a bad impression of China. Most teachers go home from here or explore a new chinese city.
It really takes a long time to really find the good people and the real chinese cities that are worth living in. I would not consider Wenzhou again. I am planning on leaving here this year. I think a bigger coastal city is better like that of Qingdao and Shenzhen. I also think the big cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong are pretty good too.
I would consider coming back, but only to the cities metioned above that i have done research on. I never did my research before coming to Wenzhou. |

Yes, they are pretty good, but that all depends....on the school you work for, the employer you have to deal with, and the students you have to teach. Of course the living is much more westernlike in Shanghai or Beijing. HK can be pretty tough for an FT. Mind you, you've got to deal with rather high costs in those above cities. Some other cities in China might be much more enjoyable, in my opinion.

That looks like you have taught in Mexico before. I bet the gap between rich and poor is rather large there or here in China, but is the teaching gig in Mexico comparable to the one in China? Do they have this "foreign teacher-oral English" approach there?

Yes, many FTs have their tendencies of not sticking to one place or position and that's not only for Wenzhou.

Now, that says it all in China. I've had that happen to me many times  ...i've been in China for 5 years, though my Chinese is as poor as aaaaa church mouse I guess I am not a good teacher at all.
