I have been offered a teaching position at EF Guilin
but I am quite upset by various posts I saw
on bad practices by EF departments.
I can't even fine EF Guilin at buxiban.com
although I must say I am rather confused;
is that a good sign or a bad sign?
Any info would be deeply appreciated!
Thanx!

It could be good, could be not. I dunno. It's worth the try though.
In fact, I'm in Guilin too and called EF for some info. They said they'd give me a call when they had enough students for more classes. So I'm kinda curious as well about the place.
Oh yeah, it's a new branch of EF here in Guilin, so that's why you can't find anything on them yet.
You already in Guilin btw?

No, I am not there yet..
Have you been there for long?
Have you ever taught there
and if you have, what's the impression that you got?
How is Guilin in general?
Are there things to do? Nightlife? Cultural activities? Excursions?
From what you say
I am gathering there aren'y many jobs available there, right?
Well, thank you for the info
and just let me know if you find out anything more.
Good luck with your search! |

Guilin is great.
It's a middle sized city, or small even, depending on your frame of reference. Plenty of jobs here, but it's a popular place to teach at so wages are generally low.
But the cost of living is low as well, and there's lots to do in the surroundings of Guilin. Excursion paradise here.
The weather is good (still) but it gets cold in winter (need airco), and humid in spring (mold).
There's plenty of high schools and uni's to work at though. and if you dont mind the low wages, it's a great place to live in. Oh yeah, you got regular nightlife here. bars and ktv and stuff. there's pool, bowling, and there's supposed to be a pub somewhere where lots of FT's go to (haven't been there this year yet).
Seeya around,

If you are still relatively happy and satisfied with the school after six months, be sure to tell us -- especially someone with the initials EG... |

Guilin is a nice place - I changed my mind about it after having spent part of my holidays there recently.
Try to locate the Buxing Lu - or Guilin's pedestrianised shopping eldorado!
It's on the east side of the Li river in the middle of town, some 15 minutes on foot from the train/bus station.
It has a big bar that sells imported beers (German, Danish, Belgian, English), a branch of Yangshuo's Global Cafe and many other good eateries and bistros.
Enjoy a ride on a No. 52 to 59 bus - tourist buses that take you to all major places of interest for free (you only pay admission to parks and sites). |

Not to me. Sorry EG. When I first started reading your posts about EF I thought to myself that EF sounds like a place I would never work at. However, your monotonous drone has left me thinking that you got the sack from EF not without reason; possibly for sticking your nose where it didn't belong. Now I'm back to the stage where I would consider working there. |

Gullin is a fab place. EF can be hit or miss, as I'm sure you are aware. Personnally my experience was mainly very positive, unlike you know who. If this is your first ESL teaching post then the learning curve will be steep. Hope your DOS (if there is one) looks after you. Good luck!
Nb: Once your settled why not consider getting together with a few of your new mates, buy a wee boat, and enjoy the Li Jiang at your leisure. It's just magic.
Feel free to PM me if you have any trouble. I know EF well and might be able to give you some advice. |

Yeah...how do you know it so well?
Daniel, Guilin is beautiful Yang Shuo (a part of Guilin) is full of FTs and pubs. The surrounding area of Guilin is gorgeous. The Guilin river is still kinda clean, but I wouldn't take a dip in. Boating trips are great though

Nice...why don't you let us know how you know the EF so well, please .....forums deserve that "first hand knowledge" more than flaming, don't they?
Peace to all knowledgeable ones out there

Sorry to set you right, Englishgibson, but Yang Shuo a.k.a. as Yangshuo is NOT part of Guilin although it may be a county inside the greater Guilin area.
I mean if you have a job with EF Guilin you will be in GUILIN CITY, and you will have to take a bus for a 65 km ride to reach YANGSHUO outside that city.
In Yangshuo there is no EF although I have seen a LINGUAPHONE office in Pantao Lu.
It is next to impossible to get a lkegal job in YANGSHUO but EF in GUILIN no doubt will take care of your resident permit. |
