Hi there,
I recently arrived in Taiwan (a week and a half a ago) and am trying to figure out what I can do/where I can go for the holidays in Oct (6-10).
I am looking at traveling to other countries in Asia or staying on the island. But I cannot find anything for a reasonable price, that's if I find anything at all. So the other option is to head south to one of Taiwan�s coastal hot spots.
Can anyone recommend a destination that can provide a great time/experience for a decent price? and that still has availabilities.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

10/10 is the only official holiday, are you sure you are going to get so much time off?

Taroko Gorge - Taroko National Park
Maolin National Park (small fee to enter the park, but i believe camping is free)

Kenting (beautiful beaches)

Kenting would probably be your best bet but is over rated in my opinion. I was there for the same holiday last year and everything was booked out. There is a camp site which costs just 100 a person but you need your own tent. It is very centra, just off the beach, which you can't actually get to, but better than having to walk km (miles) to the only available hotel or sleeping in your car like aristotle.

or away from the main beach there is another beach called Baishau (sp?) but it is much better than the main beach in my opinion

There are some excellent B&B's hidden in the little villages near Baisha that are substantially cheaper than the crap hotels available in Kenting...althought they don't serve breakfast so I guess they are just called "B"...

A warning about campsites: Taiwanese have no sense of personal space. You can arrive at an empty campsite and pitch your tent in the remotest corner, but the first Taiwanese who comes along will be sure to pitch his right next to yours.

How about Penghu? These islands in the Taiwan Strait are great for a 4/5 day getaway. Enough to do for a few days and has some excellent beaches. You can fly from Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung, or take a ferry from Kaohsiung. When I went, we got a 4 day/3 night flight and hotel deal for NT$4,500 ...

Oh, Penghu is awesome, in the summer. It gets damn cool and windy later on, but it should be okay still now. If you want to go, book now, or you might be SOL for tickets and hotels.
