|
|
I am currently a new teacher in Ontario and considering obtaining my ESL part one, which would allow me to teach ESL in an Ontario school. I don't know if anyone would know, but if I were to teach English overseas in the future, would I still need to take a TEFL course if I have this qualification? I don't see myself going anywhere for at least another couple of years, but I would like to know what kind of options I have.
Are there any teachers out there from Ontario that are considering doing something similar in the future, or have already? Any advice/knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

There are people who will say you need some sort of TEFL certification - but I think you are just fine as you are - and perhaps MUCH more qualified than your competitors.
Two or three yeas under your belt and you will qualify for the best international schools - and do far better than the rest of us!
Go for it! |

Hey Aprile, I just finished ESL Part One in June. I left for Malaysia two weeks after. There are many off-shore Ontario schools. Your ESL qualifications will be fully respected at these schools and you can teach whatever your teachable is rather than conversational English. I'm going to do parts two and three while I am here. OISE offers the courses by distance.

Hey now that I think about it, we were probably in the same course. I was the guy who taught in China and Korea before doing the course.
Peace,

Thanks for the advice guys, it's great how fast people respond here (my first posting)! Dave, I don't think we were in the same class since I haven't taken the course yet! I'm going to take it this year some time, if all goes as planned. What are you teaching in Malaysia? Thanks again for the advice.

I teach introduction to international business (BBB4M). There was a woman named Avril in the course (thought it might be you) who wanted to teach abroad. Upon re-reading your post I noticed it said "considering". Anyways, do level one and forget the TESL cert. Level one will cost you enough as it is. Basically, level one is about infusing ESL into your teaching subject, which I have found quite useful here. |

Pretty general question. Can you give us a hint as to what part of the world interests you? Requirements on qualifications varies quite a bit sometimes. |
