Greetings and best wishes to you all. Now I am back in Taipei and to my delight, I opened up my P.O. box to all kinds of goodies, chief among which was a giant envelope containing my new PhD!

Quote:
The University of South Dakota has conferred the degree of
Doctor of Philosophy
upon
Madsen Rollis...

Now I don't want to sound like an ungrateful nit-picker, but "conferred upon" sounds kinda scary:

Quote:
"There I was, walking along the streets of Downtown Sihanoukville, minding my own business, when out of nowhere this mahout drives his pregnant elephant right in front of me and --you guessed it-- BROOOOOOOOMPALOOMP! she conferred her load right on top of me."

But nevermind all that. Now I have completed and received the dang degree, my current employer says that I must get this document "certified" at the Kansas City TECO office. I know that a couple of you here have done the PhD thang (one guy from the University of Southern Queensland had lots of good advice, but I forgot whom), so here come my questions...

1) Because I live in Taiwan now, can I do this by mail?

2) Can I send photocopies of the degree? After working so hard and so long on my PhD, I am afraid to send the ORIGINAL CERTIFICATE.

3) Will the TECO need transcripts from my graduate school?

4) Is there a fee involved? If so, how much?

I have visited the TECRO website and read their PDF files but I am still not sure if their information applies to me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. 謝謝! Smile

I think if you pay a visit or make a phonecall to the US representative office in Taipei they will be able to help you with getting it certified. They will be able to communicate with the TECO office back in the US and help to send the documents for you. I am pretty sure the UK office offers such a service, so I should imagine most will too.

You could also try emailing the TECO office in the US directly and see what they recommend. I know what you mean about sending the original. DHL/FedEx will ensure a prompt and insured delivery of documents worldwide although the price may be a little more than the Post Office. Worth the hassle and cost though for peace of mind.

Oh yeah, congrats Dr. Hammer! (I think that name is going to stick now.)

Shaun

Hooray! I got a "sorta-answer" from the Kansas City TECO...

Quote:
Dear Dr. Wei,

First, you can send your DIPLOMA to our office for verification since South Dakota State belongs Kansas office's jurisdiction.

Second, please take a few minutes to look at our requirements (please check the attachment) and mail all of them to us (for the return envelope, just add US$18 to the fees and go to the any Taiwanese bank ask they issue a US$ check for you).

Please e-mail school's registrar office ask them for issuing a "degree verification" and it send to our office directly if you don't have a transcript with the confirmation of the degree award.

And you can just send the copy of your diploma but you need to sign your name and put "此影本與正本相符" on the back and include a copy of your Taiwan passport.

Please give me a call at 816-531-1298 #103 or email me back if you need more information after you read our instructions.

julia

That was pretty straightforward --I guess-- although I forgot to tell her that I'm not an R.O.C. citizen... yet.

Oh, yeah. And thanks for the kind words of congratulations. Smile
