"Hey Paul! Great area! Nice work. Grochowska is definately one of the nicest streets in Warsaw. The area you are in is very quaint and beautiful."
What's wrong with Grochowska??? I had a really nice flat just off Grochowska for a year.
A lot of people choose to live there. But then again, there are others who shit themselves if they have to cross to the east side of the Wisła at night. |

I quite agree about the east side of Warsaw - nicer and more characterful than so much of the west side - I don't know why so few yeachers want to live there.
Then again, I don't know why anyone would actually WANT to live outside Warsaw either. |

It depends how far past the river you need to go. Saska Kepa is close enough. |

| There aren't really any no-go areas though. Even the scruffiest bits. |

| Excuse me for being a pedant, but the term is "immersed" NOT "emerged" in a culture or language. |

As a fellow female in Poland, I understand that perhaps some of the men might not be aware of the 'specific' problems we face, particularly with regard to safety in our homes.
Frankly, steer clear of ANYTHING your employer proposes. There is ALWAYS a hitch, and you don't want to [as someone pointed out] be out of a job and out of a home because of a work disagreement. Also you don't want your neighbour reporting back your every move to your Boss.
There are many great places to live in Poland, aside from Warszawa, Krakow and Wroclaw. Even though Lodz is considered a 'filthy' city, I lived there for some time, and I can honestly say, I met some really amazing people and had some great times there. I'm still close with my old flatmate from there, who I met at the school I was teaching at. [She was a fellow teacher.] Accomodation is cheaper than in other big cities and Lodz is really expanding and improving economically, so it's beginning to show on the landscape.
Other smaller places like Bydgoszcz, Torun, Poznan, Lublin, Gdansk to name a few are worth looking at. People are nice generally, though if you're 'green' and don't speak the language it can be difficult. I rented a very expensive place here in Torun when I first came, and lived there 6 months til I found my CHEAP beautiful, old attic apartment, overlooking the Stary Rynek. And I have a GREAT landlord!! ME = Lucky.
Anyway, all I'm saying is, security is one of my main issues, as I'm sure it will be for you. Foreigners stick out like 'dogs balls', particularly foreign women, and moreso female foreign Native Speakers, as we're in the minority here. Use your intuition. It will serve you well.
If you want to ask me about anything, I might be able to help. PM me. |
