NO!

But I did once see dolphin meat for sale at a supermarket in Shizuoka ... So if you wanted dolphin sushi, you could make your own.

Thanks.

Reason for my asking, was because if they did come from whale or dolphin, then I'm avoiding it.

Recent samples tested from supermarkets showed horrendously high levels of mercury in both dolphin and whalemeat. Certainly enough to cause major health problems as mercury, once in the body, never leaves. This was news here about five or six months ago. The report also highlighted a lot of dolphin being passed off as whalemeat.

Damning reports like this are few and far between in Japan so I would be inclined to believe it.

We went on a whale watching tour off Vancouver Island last year, and the guide said the same thing about mercury in whales. I guess whales have so much blubber to keep them warm that toxins just absorb right into them (into the fat), and like you said, mercury never leaves. He said the levels were incredibly high. In fact it seems to me he mentioned another chemical too, and that if the same proportion of it was found in a human, the human would have died long ago.

It's rather bland, really - and very fatty. I tried it once in a Japanese restaurant in Korea. Free Willy, don't eat 'em!

Cheers,

Joe

Actually the whales are top of the food chain in the ocean. Mercury levels are high in seas around Japan due to pollution so all sea creatures ingest it naturally. But when they start eating each other they get added mercury from what they eat.

Unless someone/thing else eats you, the mercury will stop at you in the food chain if you eat whalemeat that is contaminated.

Quite a bit of the "whale meat" in Japan is actually dolphin meat. Japanese oversight agencies have routinely found "whale meat" to be mislabeled. As previously mentioned, the toxicity in much of the meat is off the scale. I have eaten a lot of sashimi but I won't touch whale.
