Can someone advise me on a government kindergarten? I have been offered a shared apartment, 20 hours a week teaching (30 30 minute periods) plus one hour a day meetings, 4000 a month pay, and I must pay 2500 a semester for my dependent child, 2000 deposit deducted from first pay, 3 weeks paid spring vacation, 2200 holiday bonus, insurance at a certain hospital, return air and reimbursement at end of year.
I have an Matesol and 15 years high school experience, but I need to find a job that will take my child for the same hours, hence the kindergarten. I`ve had numerous rejections from unis because of the childcare.
I am waiting for responses for international schools as well, but I am too late for this year. |

Is it a real MA, I mean... from a real University. If so just don't take anything that's less that 8000 for a job like that. Perhaps try to get something at a senior middle school and hire a Chinese lady (mother of one of the English teachers at the school for example) to take care of your little boy/girl in the times s/he isn't at kindergarten.
It's a horrible thing to say, but there are so many under-qualified people around here that really good people have a hard time demanding better conditions because the crap people lie about their qualifications. |

Yes, it is a real Masters in Education - TESOL, from a very good university. I also have another masters in translation.
It is not that easy to find child care -- in Canada it has taken me two years to find someone who wasn't awful and dangerous. So I prefer to have my child at the same school with me or in the school's daycare. You were probably much luckier.
I have never seen any job offer above 6600. |

Try the new Canadian school in Beijing or Kinstar School...the pay should be around 22 to 31 K RMB per month...they just hired a new teacher at the Canadian School so openings keep coming due to increased enrolments. |

Van,
From what you say it certainly sounds like a place to avoid at all costs. With your fine qualifications, the right one will come along soon.
Remember the old adage: act in haste; repent at leisure. |

30 periods a week in 6 days - you will be putting in 5 periods a day, or two-and-a-half hours.
Will it be spread over the whole day?
If the lessons are back-to-back it is going to exhaust you!
But long presence times also are taxing.
And a basic pay of 4000 is a bit on the low side though not really bad - IF THE REST WERE ALRIGHT.
But I see from your description that the rest is not all that fine and dandy.
Meetings? Every day a one-hour meeting? No thanks! You will be wasting your time, especially since the leaders will always be late.
I am in favour of structured, scheduled teacher meetings - but not on a daily basis.
These meetings are unproductive and a perfect means for controlling you.
There is another angle.
You taught at a school - they are a kindergarten. Basically, a kindergarten is a preparatory stage for the children before they go on to school.
Unfortunately, Chinese kindergartens are designed as schools that precede the regular primary school classes. They are intended to give children a perceived head start in their education but this head start just can't materialise with cramming as the teaching method.
You will soon burn out under such circumstances.
Besides I don't think your child would benefit that much from being schooled there.
It's all about rote-learning and no play!
And yes, some kindies actually pay double the salary you mentioned! |
