Hi everyone!

I understand that the questions I'm going to ask are going to be really repetitive to some of you, so I apologise in advance.

Basically, I'm australian, studying the Trinity CertTESOL right now in Edinburgh, looking to go to Hong Kong after for teaching. I don't have any previous language teaching experience but I have taught small groups in Kung Fu and IT. I'm actually looking to work specifically in Hong Kong so I can do further Kung Fu training with my Grandmaster who lives in Sham Shui Po, Kowloon.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to best emphasise my skills for the Hong Kong working environment and anything else I could do in the meantime to improve my chances for employment that would be fantastic.

As I understand it from what I've read here and otherwise, that since I don't have a university degree I don't qualify for the NET programme and will most likely be employed in a private school. So far I've found one school group called English for Asia. Has anyone heard of the school? Also if anyone has any recommendations for schools I could contact that'd help me alot.

And for those teaching in Hong Kong; what are your schools curriculums like? Are they grammar based/conversational based? Do they allow for experimentation?

Thankyou to everyone taking the time to read this. I'm excited to be moving into the next stage of my life!

Hey Nick,

The TESOL is very important to employers in Hong Kong, so it's good that you're doing that. I'm not sure which school to go for, but I would recommend applying to a lot of places and applying early. The recruitment process in Hong Kong can be extremely slow so start as soon as possible.

Go to the above site daily to check for job opportunities. Some really good private jobs come up from time to time.

Good luck,

Nick

Thanks for the help Smile

I was probably going to try applying locally when I get there. I'm going to enter on a UK tourist visa (which I believe is still 6 months). I hope it wouldn't take longer than that.

But I'll keep an eye out on the classified post. Thanks!
