I think it goes back to tribal times, hence the grunting, shouting, throwing rocks, making primitive weapons, racism, aggression, violence...

Nowadays it's just about making fat piles of cash for everyone involved.

Sounds a bit like one of my classes

well then, steiner, don't keep me in suspense...
I can only tell you that football was first recorded in 1409 as something that can be kicked around. first games in 1532 in Roman legions and in 1630 this game became an obsession of England...

october,

1. Go to page 1 of this thread.
2. Scroll down until you see an avatar like the one at the left of this post.
3. Read the post next to that avatar.
4. Skip the next post, that one's by dyak.
5. Read the one after dyak's, that's mine, too. This is the important one.

Feel free to skip step number 3.

If you still are in suspense as to where the word soccer comes from then I just can't help anymore.

The comments made about baseball were totally wacko. Baseball is a skilled game where race has nothing to do with success. Latin athletes do great at baseball simply because they love the game.
In my opinion, baseball has great parity in the skill level of different races of people. All the top players are black, white, latino. I can think of 30 top players from all three races, 10 black, 10 white, 10 latino, and not for sure say which players are better.
And, although i respect aussie football and rugby, don't belittle american football please. The people who play it are suberb athelete, playing in an environment that would make all of us "pice" our pants.
Don't bad mouth baseball simply because it's a american sport. Sure, it can be boring at times but it can also be truly exciting. I think we alll have a right to call some sports boring, but we shouldn't insult the people who like them or play them.[/quote]

Hi gerard,
Thanx for the posting. I've been following the women's World Cup from the States. The F.I.F.A. no. 1 ranked American gals are playing great!!!!! They're in the semifinals against a tough German team. We'll see what happens. Canada has been a big surprise with their success, and the Brazilian women were upset. Soccerway.com is a cool futbol website. Check it out if you haven't already.
Regarding golf and basketball, PLENTY of people watch!!!!! Okay? Because of Tiger Woods success..do you know who he is?..there's a new, younger generation of golf fans. Basketball has become quite the international sport with lots of fans all over the globe. Many different international teams have raised the level of their play, and are doing better in international competition.

Aw, Gerard, you disappoint me.
Soccer is really amazingly dull and fittin' only for foreigners. Scoring seems to be optional in this game. Yawn!

The only good bit is at the end of the games, when the drunken fans beat the crap out of each other and tear down the stadium and, eventually, overthrow their government.

It's also OK if you can find games broadcast in Spanish. The games still suck but the announcers are way cool. Very Happy

Dear lajzar,
Perhaps some think soccer ( football ) is boring only because they're unfamiliar with the rules and the strategies of the game. Any sport you don't understand would be one you'd most likely consider " boring ". On the other hand, I do know the rules and the strategies for golf, bowling and horseshoes, but I still wouldn't watch any of them without a gun to my head.
Regards,
John

johnslat, I was thinking the same thing today about the importance of understanding a game in order to enjoy it. I understand soccer and it's an enthralling, beautiful game when it's played well. Any sport can be boring when it's played poorly.

I find rugby pretty boring, but I'm sure it's either because A) I've only seen bad rugby or B) I don't understand it. I'm positive it's not really boring.
