I can make my living anyplace with a stable internet connection. It's legal, but hard to verify.
I'm interested in spending a year or more living in Spain. Is it possible for me to get legal residency given that I will essentially be donating to the local economy?
I won't be buying/investing in Spain, but I have about 2 year's living expenses in liquid assets.
Should I just sign up for the least demanding possible Spanish classes and get a student visa?
Thanks |

Hi,
What do you mean by "hard to verify"? If you are a freelancer or teleworker, you should have invoices/pay stubs, tax info, etc.
I am in a similar job and have looked at living in various countries, as my husband will be looking for a job at an international school in a couple of years. Some countries (Spain may be one of them - I haven't looked further into that because I can live and work legally there) have visas that you can get if you have a source of income from outside the country. I am looking into this for Mexico. Usually it's the type of visa obtained by retirees, but as far as I understand, I could get it there because I work for and get paid by companies outside the country (no Mexican customers). You have to provide bank statements or something showing that you will get this money every month. You should be able to swing that on your liquid assets alone if Spain has a similar visa.
Sorry to be vague, because I don't know the specifics for Spain, but just putting the idea out there! If you go to Amazon, there are a couple of books out on living and working in Spain that should contain the specifics, or contact the consulate/embassy.
Cheers and let me know how it works out! |

RESIDENCE VISA FOR NON-LUCRATIVE ACTIVITIES
Granted if residence in Spain is not to undertake lucrative activities. The existence of sufficient economical possibilities to live in Spain during the stay, must be proved.
RESIDENCE VISA TO UNDERTAKE ACTIVITIES THAT DO NOT REQUIRE A WORK PERMIT
Before requesting this Visa, you must obtain an official certificate whereby Spanish authorities declare that a work permit is not needed.

Either of those might work, thanks.
