Any expats down in TIJUANA? I've taught English for a few years in South Korea and Brazil. Now I'm back in the USA (San Diego to be exact), and I'm missing the ol' teacher expat life. Of course I've been dropping down below the border quite a bit, and Tijuana is a pretty cool city!! It doesn't deserve the negative reputation it has at all. Anyhow, I've been in San Diego for about one month, but by the end of next month by sublet will be finished, and I'm going down there to live and teach.
Anyone in Tijuana now.. I'd like to get into the network community and figure out where to live, how to rent a place, and some good schools where I could possibly teach.. basically all that information..
let me know! |

BNIX.. Tijuana is significantly more than 'a sleazy place'.. its a city of 2 million Mexicans.. and one of the best economies and wealthiest cities in Mexico.. however, most tourists do seem to only go directly to the redlight district and go directly back to where they come from completely ignoring the 2 million people who aren't 'catering to the tourists'..
next time go check out the rest of the city.. its actually quite wealthy.. and the Mexicans are SO nice.. but i too hate the redlight area.. people harrass you.. if I only went to the hookers and the redlight district then i'd hate Tijuana too!! I'm sure of that!! (Much like i'd hate any city if i neglected the city itself and only hung around the seedy redlight districts).. But I got out and saw the real Tijuana and it looks good..
Next time you go check out Plaza Fiesta, Pueblo Amigo, and Paseo de los Heroes.. its filled with more middle-class and wealthier Mexicans going to restaurants, bars, worldclass theater, operas, and everything else..
anyhow.. the sleazy part of Tijuana is definetely not fun.. its a hellhole.. but if you avoid that small part of the city and all of the American citizens there.. you find this pretty much untouched city with no Americans.. Ihave no idea why Americans are so obsessed with only going to the redlight district.. they are missing out on one of the most dynamic cities with one of the best econonies in Mexico..
regardless.. i prefer it that way.. let the Americans wallow in a redlight hellhole.. i'd just as well hangout with the other 2 million tijuana mexicans that has a strange eerie absense of americans.. pretty ideal.. |

Wha'z up?
Tiger Beer, I wish I could help you out in regards with Tijuana since I lived in San Diego for 8 years and loved the place. Unfortunately I didn't have enough time to explore Tijuana while living in San Diego since I was going to San Diego State for my ESL certificate as well as BA in political science and working at the Union-Tribune full time. I actually thought about doing something similar as what you have in mind, that is to live down there and really get to know the place rather than just to hit the party spots. If you find out anything, let me know.

Thank the GI's for usurping all the glory of introducing TJ to us all, and now look at it all-hehehehe. The sex scene is so fun, but the gals are ripoffs. I had one slick a 50 out of my front jean pocket and I still do not know how she did it. Beware. But TJ has more to offer like good restaurants, etc., and the red district with friends is tough to top, and the discos and beautiful women to watch. Way cool. Maybe more fun for the male species. Cheaper rent then go over to work in USA-I know a few dudes who have done that too. |
