Ive got accomadation in Kyoto for free. As Im on the WHV plan would be a big hassle to commute from surrounding cities like osaka? I imagine I might have to work there if I cant find anything in kyoto.
Sorry for the multiple posts. Just very curious. |

| A huge number of people commute to Osaka from kyoto every day. The quality of life in kyoto is great but there aren't many jobs. Too many people want to live here. Just if you don't mind standing on the train for your 45 min commute, that's all. |

to have a free place to stay in Kyoto, I think a commute to work in Osaka is reasonable.
Some people might find the commute long but lots of people think a 90 minute commute to Tokyo is normal. |

| I pretty much agree with what everyone wrote. I commute longer than 45 minutes just to work out. You will eventually get used to the commute. |

I am thinking of making the move from Sendai-city to Kyoto. Can anyone tell me what some of the Advantages and disadvatages of moving there would be? I would already have a job and accomedation there.
Sendai is in North Japan and I have found it to be very hard to adjust here. Little to do, very costly to commute to other parts, very conservative, less friendly locals. |

Kansai is a good place to be because they have Kobe, Nara, Osaka, and Kyoto.
I think you will find it interesting. Getting around by train there is easy to do.
Shikoku isn`t far away either. |

Well, mtheta, if you get friends and keep busy, it's a great place. For food, atmosphere, and nice scenery, Sendai is great. Spend a lot of time alone and it can be really depressing, I think. I spent most of my time in that part of Miyagi-ken living with my girlfriend and enjoyed always having someone around. She was from Sendai so she showed me lots of interesting places.
I love Kyoto above all other places I've visited in Japan, but it's not a huge town with a ton of things going on all over the place like Tokyo. But Osaka is close and you can find lots to do there. Eventually you'll have to settle down and learn to like your surroundings. You'll have to make friends locally and feel at home in your neighborhood; otherwise, you'll always have the moving bug. You'll be able to find work in a big place like Tokyo anytime you want if you're serious about it. But, give Sendai a chance and finish out the year of your contract (assuming you're under one) or just finish whatever it is that you went to Sendai to do.
If your biggest problem is living in a town full of old-fashioned, conservative people, moving to a place like Kyoto won't improve the quality of your life that much to justify throwing away a job and making a huge move. Those old-fashioned country folk may be more common in Tohoku than Kansai, but they're everywhere in Japan. Tohoku is not the brightest spot in the country, but stick it out for a bit. Prove to yourself that you can hack it there. If you can, you can hack it pretty much anywhere in the country. |

Thanks for the advice. I know logically you are right, but I can't help kicking myself for settling here above all places. I am sure there are great things about Sendai, and I have experienced some of them. There will always be a better oppurtunity no matter where or what you do in life, so I need to just deal with that.
I vow to give Sendai at least 6 months.  |

There's an international center near Sendai Castle. It's a good place to learn a lot about Sendai and the Tohoku area as well as a way to meet other foreigners and Japanese people and learn about the local nightlife. Check out Matsushima, this fall. It's beautiful. Shiogama Shrine is also nice, especially this time of year. |

Hi mtheta,
Although I haven't been to Sendai, I've heard some nice things about it. It's a smaller city though, and my impression was that there aren't that many people who've been abroad for extended periods of time.
I'm actually getting tired of Tokyo and was contemplating moving to a smaller city like Sendai, but your comments have certainly given me pause.
Can you give an example of what you mean by old-fashioned?
