spiral 78,
Thanks for your advice, thanks for listening, thanks for everything! If you're still in Madrid when I finally get there, I'd love to invite you for a "copa" and some tapas at your favorite neighborhood hangout.

regarding Training Express and taxes my understanding was always this. If your legal you pay 7% tax (15% after 2 years) and Social Security of 230 a month. This gets you pension contributions and Health Care. If you don't registar (which most teachers I've meet don't bother) than you pay 15% black tax.
But in thinking about it, it's not the Training Express responsibility to submit your taxes, your a free lancer you have to file yourself.
I'm Canadian and my Wife is German so she and myself have the right to work in Spain. But I'm not going to bother as its cheaper for me to pay the 15% and buy private health than to pay 7% and 230 a month. |

I believe elito was concerned because taxes would be taken out of his (her) salary even though he (she) would be working illegally. |

This brings up a good question, I just signed a contract with Training Express and they specified 15,30 and hour no taxes (rather than the 18 less taxes). Does it matter weather they take taxes or not? I mean if you haven't registared they have no idea how much taxes you've paid.
I was thinking that it may be better to be paid 18 less taxes to avoid problems should I decide to register.
They also gave me 9 hours a week, 4 mornings and 2 afternoons which is enough for me I plan to teach private for the rest of the time. |

tim horton's man,
I'm glad to hear that things are working out for you at TE, but your experiences don't have anything to do with those of people working illegally, like elito. Elito (and I) would still like to know why taxes would be taken out for teachers working without papers. Where would this money end up, in government coffers or in the school's bank account?

update: now that I've been working for a while, basicly what it seems to be if you don't have the required paper work (which I currently don't) you simply agree to an hourly wage and they pay you "cash". I'm currently being paid 15 eruos and hour, which is what I can gather about what you'd get if you were legal.
Once I have my NIE and SS numbers than that will jump to 18 at training express and 22 at tandem, and I will be responsible for taxes. If I wish I can have a contract which I am an employee and they are reponsible for taxes. |

Update: I'm been working with TE for a while and I'm not happy for a coupld of reasons, the classes they gave me have canceled numerious times which means I don't get paid, but more importantly the pay is on the low side.
Legal self employed 18 an hour vs 22 to 25 at other agencys (15 vs 16 cash only) but more importantly they only pay 15 a month for travel. Most agencys pay 6 to 10 a day or 100 to 200 a month big difference.
Personally I wouldn't bother with TE there is tons of work out there and loads of agencys that are will to pay more money. |

Thanks for the tip about TE. I will be arriving in Madrid in mid-January to begin my job search, so that could be one school to scratch off my list of possible employers.
