Hey guys,

I've been teaching in Nagoya for 4 months and I'm thinking of transfering to Tokyo. I've only been there once so I'm not too familiar with all the different neighborhoods but I just wanted to know where you guys live in Tokyo and if you like it, why, or where you'd rather live in Tokyo and why.

I like the big city bussle although it would be nice to live somewhere not too loud...

Arigats.

You might want to consider South Tokyo neighborhoods like Meguro-ku, or Shinagawa. They tend to be expensive, though. Kawasaki city and North Yokohama are fairly close to Tokyo, but quiet.

Good luck.

If you have the cash, I have been hearing a lot about the neighbourhoods located on the Denentoshi line. Don't have much first hand knowledge but from that line you can get out to Kanagawa where its a little less crowded ( transfering onto the odakyu/enoshima line takes you to the beach) or you can head straight into Shibuya for the shopping/nightlife.

I live in Takadanobaba, bit pricey, very convenient as it's on the Tozai, Yamanote, and Seibu Shinjuku lines. That being said, very busy with students (university, junior college, and music schools), lots of restaurants (students keep some of the prices down), not so much green as the parks here are small. My firend has 1DK now, pricey at 120k a month, and he is farther from the station than me.

Probably some areas in Saitama and Chiba would be better from cost and greenery points of view, but convenience for going out and variety of restaurants would suffer (as well as enduring commuter crushes on the lines coming into and out of Tokyo).

Depends if you can share and what you're willing to put up with for view, noise from neighbors, length of commute, etc.

I live in Suginami-ku on the Chuo line, very handy for Shinjuku (12 mins) and Kichijoji (4 mins). Setagaya and Meguro wards are also nice, handy to Shibuya and other areas, and although they have the reputation of being expensive areas, there are some inexpensive parts as well.

They're all much of a muchness if you ask me. The main thing to consider is where you'll be working and where you need to get to... How much time are you prepared to spend riding on trains?

I live in Nishi Shinjuku near the Park Hyatt... I really like it but if you want somewhere not too loud then it's not for you. I like the area... It's modern and clean (although some people consider it a bit sterile) and it's EXTREMELY convenient. Actually it's probably number#1 for convenience. It's great for transport... I have a choice of about 8 train lines and almost all of my shopping and entertainment I can do in Shinjuku. It's easy to get to my school. Most of the entertainment options are on the east side, but it's still only a 15 minute walk from my place. It does tend to become wall to wall people on the weekend though. Once you start living in Shinjuku, it's difficult to live anywhere else... unless you're a country person!

Haa.. I am by no means a country person. Thanks everyone for the advice.

So, is it worth it- going broke, or at least not saving any dough, for the Tokyo experience? I get the feeling it might be.

I live in Komagome on the Namboku and Yamanote lines. it is really convenient, not too big but big enough and convenient to the places i go to in tokyo.
mostly you need it to be convenient for you, so if you party everynight, live somewhere close to the parties, if you want to see nature, live near nature, if you want to focus on your work, live near your school.

Komagome is a really nice area, has some beautiful parks and enough local atmosphere to get me by. It is known to be a bit expensive, but if you look enough you can find a place anywhere for the right price.
