I will be staying at the Asha Guesthouse October 12-14 before heading to Phuket, and I would like to be able to see at least some of the major Bangkok attractions before I head south. I'd really like to make it a self-guided tour but this is my first time in Asia and I will be travelling alone. Anyone have any ideas as to where to find a solid guide? Should I just ask the desk clerk at the guesthouse? |

^ Hi Matt
You don't really need a tour guide for 2 days.
Asha Guesthouse is within walking distance of BTS Mo Chit Station;
On Day 1, walk to Mo Chit Station and pick up a free BTS Guide.
Most of the sights you'll want to see are in that little booklet!
You can figure out the Skytrain in about 20 minutes.
It's easy to use and everything is in English.
There are only 2 lines, so it's a snap.
If I were you, I'd buy an all-day ticket for 120 Baht;
with that, you get unlimited journeys all day long.
note: you have to buy that ticket at the window.
At BTS Saphan Taksin Station (the end station on the Silom Line)
you can jump on a tourist express boat (100 Baht for an all-day pass)
and then head up river to The Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, etc
and top off your day with dinner & a cold beer on Khao San Road.

There are thousands of BKK tour guides. Just ask ANY Tuk Tuk Driver and he'll be happy to assist you. |

^ Hi Lisa
PS for Matt_22
Here's a link to the Chao Phraya Express Boat homepage
showing the different pier names and departure times.
If you follow my advice you can spend an entire day
cruising around Bangkok for only 220 Baht - US $6.
The free BTS Map & Guide is usually sitting on the ledge
next to the fare window where you buy tickets,
but sometimes you have to ask for it.

Hi Kent,
Glad you posted about the express boat. I was going to ask you about that.
As a sidenote, last time I was in Thailand I took the Wan Fah dinner cruise and I highly recommend this:
It's about 1,100 baht and well worth it. IMHO.
