Lately yuppie-ish guys have been approaching me asking me for bus money! They say they don't have any change, and ask for three RMB. I wonder what the deal is with that. Also, like five minutes apart, I had two separate "families" come up to me and give me the exact same story that they were migrants and they wanted me to give them 7 RMB so they could buy a meal for their son. Why seven, I wonder?
This is in Shenzhen, not Shanghai, so it's off the original topic. Actually, nobody's ever approached me in Shanghai -- the only problem I've had there is getting hit by trash somebody's dropped out of their window. |

Y'all are making me happy to be in the middle of nowhere. When I was hassled this summer in Beijing I usually just replied in Russian. They'd look really confused and keep speaking English, and so I'd speak slowly and deliberately, still in Russian, until they left.
If there was a crowd I'd just ignore the person, quicken my pace, and try to steer him into a lamppost or something as he tried to keep up and talk to me. |
