How good have we got it? We live in nice accomodation, our bills are cheap, are teaching hours are not high and we are treated well and respected by the locals.
I think we have it pretty good here in Indonesia.
Has anyone worked in another country that can better an ESL teacher's lifestyle here? |

Working in Indonesia is great if you can get out of the cities. Getting out of the cities is not easy, but it's certainly easier than getting out of the country.

Ellipsis overload! Who are you quoting?
...
Maybe you can explain why, if you love Indonesia so much, you are looking for work on the Middle East Forum - without a degree
If I didn't like it, I would leave. Why? because I can. |

I see
You answered my question with a question.
Let me do the same.
Why did you remove 99% of your previous posting?
Good thing about Indonesia, still have some people who believe that Degree and Diploma are only papers, and it doesn't mean that you are a good teacher based on this. The important thing is what you deliver in the classroom. That's why i'm able to work for an International school. |

That has always bugged me too. How can a degree actually make you a better teacher?
I can understand if a teaching degree is required or degree in the subject you are teaching (if you are working for an International school or a National+), but most places want any degree and that doesn't make sense to me. |

I suppose having a degree is an indication of competence, but of course is no guarantee of it... |

You don't work for an international school. If you did, it would be as a cleaner.

If you delivered this level of quality in the classroom, I would certainly ask for my money back.
A degree doesn't make you a better teacher; however, it does mean you can get a job in a better school (you may even be able to get that job in the Middle East - though I doubt it with your knowledge of grammar). Furthermore, I would be ashamed to tell a student (or parent) that I didn't have a degree: 'yeah, I left school at 16 and worked in a bar, i was too lazy to get an education' - that's much better.
Please decide who you are - are you the parent of a child going to SPH? If you are teaching at an international school, why are you sending your child to SPH? And why, if you are so smart without your degree, are you then sending your child to a third-party course to improve his/her writing skills - why don't you do it? (obvious answer: see above)
Additionally, if a degree isn't important, why did you tell your present employer that you have one. Furthermore, why are you panicking about the government's new regulation concerning expats & degrees.
It looks like you are stuck here with no choices - I hope you like the rush hour traffic.

The students are fortunate that you are not teaching mathematics, but it's unfortunate that you are teaching English.
Now back to your question, 'why don't you leave?'
I do believe I've answered it. I will leave when I decide to leave. Why? because I can. |
