I got a job offer from a language school in Veracruz and wanted to see what you guys think. It will be my first EFL job, but I have a TEFL and bachelors in Spanish. I also have some volunteer ESL experience in the states. The school wants to pay 45 pesos/hour and start me off at 20 hours. That comes out to 3600 a month. I know that's not much but if I can increase my hours would that be bad? Also, how many hours do you teach? Would more than 25 a week be too demanding?
Any thoughts....
Thanks,

I think you'll get a lot of It depends for answers to this one.
What's the cost of living like in the area where you'd be living? Is that 45 pesos before or after taxes? Paid holidays and other days off or not?
Teaching 20-25 hours per week can be relatively easy or quite demanding depending on the type of school and what's expected of you. Is the school supportive of or opposed to the idea of its teachers picking up additional work at other schools or doing private tutoring? |

Sounds like a good place to start while you get settled in the area and build up some experience. A school that pays 45 hour can't be that demanding. Once you're there check out the universities as they usually pay at least double. Cambridge or TOEFL experience will widen your options. |

Is the job in the city of Veracruz or somewhere else in the state? Prices for apartments and other essentials will vary widely and you need to make sure you have some savings to fall back on if you don't get more hours quickly. 3600 pesos is not much to live on in most places, unless you're sharing accommodation. |
