|
|
Claude Fortin, a Canadian teacher at an exclusive private school in Istanbul, which many here are familiar with, faces 5-10 years in a Turkish jail, following a cooperative effort between the FBI cyber crimes unit and Turkish authorities.
Fortin is guilty of downloading thousands of images onto his computer, including vast quantities of child porn.
Fortin, 45 years old, and a francophone from the Province of Manitoba, faces 5-10 years in a Turkish jail for his crime, and the whole affair created shock waves at the school he taught at, because he (Fortin) was well liked by students and staff.

According to the Turkish news he was head of the English dept. I wonder if the parents are pulling their kids out of Enka. |

Oh the humilation of it. Another dazed, confused yabanci being led away surrounded in the debris of his life. What was he thinking?
I suppose he was also distributing it as well. The FBI wouldn't be involved in a "mere" child porn horder. I guess he will be watching reruns of "Midnight Express" for awhile. |

I don't feel sorry for him. It was no minor thing he was doing. |

Same here.....AS a Dad, I want him to go to hell. Perhapes a Turkish Jail is too good for him.
BTW some of the reports have him giving '''free lessons to poor kids''' |

I didn't say I felt sorry for him. Here was a man in close contact with children collecting and manufacturing child porn. ( the line about the fez and sheer cloth did make me smile, I will admit that much.) And, no matter what your tastes may be, even he seemed to be going overboat in his collection unless he was operating some kiddie porn site. I do kind of wonder what he will tell the folks back home. "Turkey wasn't for me. Too darn hot. Not enough playgrounds either."
However, despite the evidence being pretty plentiful, he still has only been charged and not convicted. For a yabanci, especially one in his former postion, the mere suspicion of guilt is enough to ruin his life.
I recall a scandal in Izmir many moons ago about a man who was charged with selling Turkish babies to childless families in Britain. I happened to work with the man and was, therefore, able to hear both sides of the story. His version was that everything was handled above board, with credible legal arrangements and the like, and the father of the child later landed in jail and attempted to blackmail all the parties involved by going to Star Haber. (This was a time when Star was plaything of a rather notorious scandal monger who, I believed himself later landed in jail. I may be wrong but I think so) In any case, the tv news and the newspapers sold a lot of papers for the next few weeks, going so far as to publish his name and adress. He lost his job, nearly lost his own adopted children and his status in Turkey. I suppose all charges were later dropped but then nobody hears about it later. |

I didn't say you said you felt sorry for him.
You have a point. Innocent til proven guilty. But, by all reports, he was found with a pile of porn "in hand". Looks bad enough. |

Oh my! Look what I found....
http://www.royalcityrecord.com/issues02/063102/news/063102nn3.html
His colleagues point out that Fortin looks for new and interesting ways to teach his students. He finds hooks to engage them and to spur them on to meeting new challenges. Taking risks is encouraged and making mistakes is not denigrated.
"You have to love what you do. And I love working with kids - that's what inspires me. I love their level of innocence and openness. It's a privilege to teach kids. The kids speak for tomorrow and it's a privilege to help shape some of their ideas so they make good choices in the future."
That second and third sentence seems practically confessional!
I have a question. This arrest is the culmination of a 3 year investigation, but then Fortin only had a two year contract, according to the above article, dated 2004. So if I were a parent with a child at the school, I would like to know how long have the police known about this man's activities? |
