I am really beginning to feel comfortable here, I have had my issues with various people, but in general my life is really easy now.
I wouldn't mind something different next year though... I would like to make the jump to university level, which may be possible here. Japan, China, Thailand, anywhere else sounds interesting too though... wanderlust is kicking in I guess.
Anyway, back to the idea behind this, has anyone left Korea for Japan, or anywhere else for that matter and regrets it now. If so, what are your reasons? |

My post is directed at people who have left Korea. I am not sure if it qualifies as being about Korea completely, as I want to get the opinions of folks that no longer reside/teach there but once did.
I did post in the Korean forums too, although I thought it might be a tad bit more appropriate here. |

Hi chaz
I spent a year in Korea; overall it was a good experience.
I put roughly US$1,000 in the bank every month.
Since relocating to Thailand 3 years ago,
I earn roughly $1,000 every month.
Think twice before coming here.
You can live OK on $1,000 per month,
but saving is basically out of the question.
I don't regret making the move to Thailand,
but I do miss those monthly visits to the bank.

Gee, Kent. I hope you don't have any credit card debt with that salary. Also, what do you do if you need to fly home? |

As long as the focus of this thread remains on teaching in a location other than Korea, the thread will remain.
If it becomes a thread about teaching in Korea, it will be removed. |

I moved from Botswana to Korea to Taiwan to Saudi to Thailand back to Korea and back to Thailand. Didn't regret any of the moves. Each place holds a special charm - and hopefully meets your GOALS for moving.
I went back to Korea a second time for money - back to Thailand for quality of life - and hopefully here (Phuket) permanently.
But - even if you don't particularly like where you move to - you CAN always go back.
Personally, I feel that people who go and teach in one country - and never try anywhere else are missing a lot. Experiencing work and life in multiple countries puts everything in a different perspective. |

I cut up all of my credit cards 18 years ago;
arguably the smartest move of my entire life.
I am now completely debt free.
The key to teaching in countries where the pay is low
is to save money in countries where the pay is high,
and arrive in Country X with pockets full of cash.

Chaz, what is your background?
Do you have a MA in TESOL?
Do you have university teaching experience?
It is easier to get a university job in Korea than in Japan.
In Korea, the cost of living is less, and it can be easier to save money.
Korean taxes aren`t much, either. |

Uni experience has a bunch of skills which are global in scope and should be transferrable-if you already have experience and connections in SK, it may be easier to stay there and pick up a Korean Uni job, stick that on your CV and then move on. |

I've got news for you, I've stared death in the face a few times. I've been shot at a few times and I had robbers hold me up with guns pointed in my face. You could say I've cheated death. Still none of that is going to ever make be believe in something I don't believe in. Just because someone isn't Christain and doesn't have a mainstream religion doesn't mean they walk around with "no purpose or reason." |
Let me give you some advice, White. The moment you say something like " I've stared death in the face a few times. I've been shot at a few times and I had robbers hold me up with guns pointed in my face. You could say I've cheated death" is the moment people stop taking anything you say seriously. I mean, even saying something like "hey, I got lots o' girls to hook up with for a booty call" won't set off the BS meter as fast as what you said. |

The first gig was in Moscow. Great time but althought I lived VERY well, the money was meagre. Next I did Korea. When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. Walked way with the maximum allowable amount of change, did Thailand and lived well, but boy, it was tough. The last stint was in Poland. Again, meagre money compared to State's side but I had a blast. |
