Hey all. I'm planning on going to Taiwan in approximately nine (9) months. I have six month left until I have my degree, and then I'm going to be a substitute teacher in my hometown for a few months to save up some cash.

I want to work for Hess for a year or two while I get used to Taiwan, and I'm wondering, how soon should I apply if I'm planning to go over there in July? I'm pretty sure they'll hire me (my resume is rock-solid in education), but as I don't actually have a degree in hand yet, I don't know if I should apply now and then send a copy of my diploma later or wait until I at least have some form of documentation that proves I've earned my degree.

Anyone have any advice, answers, or ideas? Please help!

This is definetly a question that you should send a PM to Andrew Tiffany about. He posts here under the name "atiff", he is one of the Recruitment Directors (or some similar title) and I'm sure he can give you all the information you need.

Most likely you'll have to wait until you have your degree in hand before you can apply as this is a requirement from the Taiwan gov't for all English teachers.

Cheers/Ganbei! Surprised

How about I just reply here? Smile

You can apply to Hess at any time. As noted, you will need your degree, but not until closer to the actual time you want to come to Taiwan. You can apply and be interviewed without having it in your hands, as long as we know you are going to receive it.

I would recommend waiting until around March or April. Applying around that time is not too far out from when you want to come, and will give you the best contract and placement options available - the longer you wait, the more these options are chosen by other people.

Of course, you could apply earlier - you mention you will have your degree around April? You might like to think about coming earlier if the conditions and income you will have in Taiwan with Hess are better than those doing a short stint at home - see our information about start-up loans if you are worried about money.

Thanks! That was exactly the information I needed. I finish school March 22nd, with a C-19 form or whatever it is at first, and my diploma coming four or five months after that (UC bureaucracy makes me shudder). I hadn't heard of these start-up loans before though. I'll look into them!

Please remember that you will need an actual degree. The CLA may indeed ask to see th eoriginal, so you must bring it with you. I know that most Unis take about 3 months after graduation to send out the parchments. Sorry if this is bad news, but better to find out now than once you are here.

Cheers Big Ears. Wink
