Wow after all the earthquakes I went through after 10+ years in Japan, I finally felt the biggest one EVER in Hawaii. Who would have thought? It has virtually shut down the entire chain of islands. Oahu and the west coast of the Big Island have no power. Airports on all islands are closed.

V lucky here on the east side with power and cable.

I hope you are alright, Sherri. I heard that Kona got the worst of it.
My parents are on a cruise in the Hawaiian islands at the moment. Not sure what has happened to them or what it would be like on a ship.

We are all fine and so are the other people here I have spoken to. I think your parents would be safe on the ship. At least they would have power. Do you have any idea where they would be sailing about now? Do you know the name of their ship? The quake originated in north Kohala off shore (north of Kona). That would not be a good place to be cruising or sailing. I did hear that the people who were out at sea in Kona did not know about the quake until they came ashore.

I feel sorry for the two students we were expecting to arrive from Japan today. Last we heard they were stuck in Honolulu airport.

Let us know how your parents are doing when you hear.

Glad to hear you are okay, Sherri.

I'm leaving for Honolulu in two hours on a business trip and should arrive there Monday morning. Hopefully, the airport will be up and running again by the time we land!

I sure hope the power is back by then. It's raining there. Hot and sunny here though (usually it is the other way around). Hope your trip goes all right...

Hi Sherri,

Thanks for taking the time to post. Glad to hear you're okay and hope there's no damage to your property. Even though I know there are no reported fatalities or major injuries, I'm in the process of trying to contact friends back home just to make myself feel better. It was quite an unpleasant surprise to open up the online edition of the Advertiser this morning and see the news.

And to think that when I left the islands everyone was worrying about me getting hurt in an earthquake here in Istanbul.

Here's hoping there are no aftershocks and that the lights come on wiki wiki.

No word yet, but thanks. I am not sure of the ship, but it was a Norwegian cruiseline. I also have no idea where the ship would be. Will give an update when I hear. I am sure it is nothing though

Hi Sherri,

Story of my life. I finally get to visit Hawaii (even if just for business), and what happens? A large earthquake and local flooding...what's next, a volcanic eruption? Locusts? Laughing

Well, I'm in Kansai now, with about 5 hours of waiting still to go (no good connecting flights from where I live). Hopefully, everything will be up and running there by tomorrow.

Thanks for that website!

Taiki

The earthquakes in Japan are a lot of shaking mostly, though of course the Kobe one was a big one.

Sherri,

Amazing, that was one of the things we asked the RE agent about, when the last earthquake was Cool . Hope you didn't miss Dave's too much if you lost power Wink .
