I am moving to Kuwait next month. I have searched this forum, the web, lonely planet and still have a couple of simple questions I cannot find answers for, if anyone has the answers, I would be grateful.

Women's clothing - I know sleeves are the norm, are short sleeves OK? or does the entire arm need to be covered? I know this sounds silly, but, when one is attempting to travel light......

Alternative medicine - I use Chinese medicine rather than Western if I can, does anyone know of Chinese practioners, acupuncturists etc? What about taking Chinese teas and medicines into the country? May there be a customs issue?

Optometry - With eyes that that need new lenses at least once a year, are the services OK and prices comparable to the west?

Libraries - I am still working on some post grad studies. Do any of the universities offer borrowing to expats? If so, how is the range?

That is all for now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It depends on where you teach (or work). If the students and most staff are conservative and covered, you do begin to feel uncomfortable with displaying too much skin. I kept my sleeves to the elbow. Unfortunately right now it is very hard to find decent sleeves on anything. It is either 3/4s or these tiny things... as if there were a fabric shortage or something.

I don't think there would be a problem as long as everything is in its original package and labeled in English (since I doubt that many of the customs people read Chinese. Laughing) I'm not sure of the availability of extensive Chinese practitioners, but I know that acupuncture was available when I was there.

Should be no problem and it was cheaper than in the US. (have you considered contacts? I had this problem until I started wearing hard/gas permeable lenses and then they didn't change for the next 30 years)

Not impressive and since I was working for the university, access was easy. But I expect that expats not in the education field may have problems. You may find yourself limited to what is on the net.

Yes! When you are here in Kuwait, there will be an excellent Chinese Clinic to check out for all your needs or interests. There is also a lovely Chinese lady I know here who supplies Kuwaiti Souks with clothing. Thus, she travels to and from China often - She would also bring you anything not found here. Or, my son who has a trading office in Yianti, China could send it DHL. Where there is a will ... there is a way, lol.
What is the subject matter of your studies and requring books, etc?
There is surely a solution for that too here somehow.
