How easy is it to find work in Barcelona with a DELTA and 7 years EFL teaching experience teaching both kids and adults? Or are there already many DELTA graduates (Or perhaps I should be asking, is the DELTA even recognised in Spain??)? I've got a degree in Spanish and speak some Catalan as I used to work there pre-CELTA days....

| see my comments in the previous thread. The problem with Barcalona is there are too many teachers chasing to little work so its put downward pressure on wages. Not a problem if you only need work to supplement your savings but a problem if you need a decent wage to live on. Generally speaking there is alot more work in Madrid. |

Thanks for the honest reply- I guess I'll have to weigh things up next year when my contract ends. I am currently in the Gulf (Dubai) earning very good tax free money, but I fancy a change and would love to go back to Europe and be closer to family and friends. Also the social life here for a single 30 year old female gets quite boring after a while.
I know that I will miss the money, but am willing to sacrifice that .....
(to anyone else reading this post- anyone left the Gulf to go to Spain??) |

Not to give you the wrong impression there is work to be had in Barcalona but it's not as steady as you will find in Madrid. If you have savings and wish to work partime to earn a bit of extra cash than Barcalona maybe the ticket.
If you need a wage to live on than Madrid is better.
Alternativly is to do telephone classes doesn't pay as much 6 euros a half hour vs 15 (take home) but you can do telephone classes from anywhere |

know the feeling
Haven't left yet, but am planning to sometime in the next year or so maybe Spain or South America...there's more to life than making lots of ���- besides the Gulf is more for families and/or married couples |

I had the impression that Dubai nightlife was hot??
I may be making my way to Spain, as well -- And, yes, it must be Barcelona, as I'd move there for love. (We're already in the midst of a Paris-Barcelona romance; I couldn't imagine carrying on long-distance within Spain!) I may be interested in combining the assistantship with corporate development. Has anyone managed to do both? Has anyone left France for Spain? |

I just moved to Barcelona in September - i know when i arrived was the best time of year here job wise but i was literally inundated with interviews & job offers within my first 2 weeks!!!! I had also emailed my CV to a few schools before i arrived which im sure did help!!! I ended up working at the school i did my TEFL in (which was the one i really wanted) - however they ended up really messing me around with hours & money, so last week i began the job hunt again - i started working full time in another school on Monday.
So the moral of this story is that there is still plenty of work in Barcelona, especially if you are prepared to go to the suburbs (half hour by train) - and no the wages arent great but the cost of living is pretty low (except accomodation)
If you really fancy Barca then contact a few schools to see whats happening - also keeep an eye out on Loquo.com |

I live in Doha (non existant nightlife but very hot weather) but bcnbound lives in dubai (decentish nightlife but very superficial in my opinion)
who knows may see you in barcelona next year!

Same thing in Madrid, no one wants to work in the suburbs. Which is good for me cuase I live there and I'm hoping to avoid spending all day on the metro
BTW wish me luck I write my TEFL exam tomorrow if I pass (at this point its 50 50) I buying Natasha and Senida (teachers from www.ttmadrid.com where I doing/did my TELF) lunch (sorry not sure how to insert a url[/url] |

The thing about Dubai is that after a year or so "all that glitters is not gold" it does wear off and you begin to realise that there is more to life than making money....

well if that is how you are now thinking then Barca is the perfect place for you  no-one is ever going to get rich by teaching here but hey theres no better place to be poor in |

good to hear - i didnt have much when i came here & still managed to live ok (i only have expensive tastes when it comes to alcohol!!!) - now the only thing i wish i could afford is a deposit for a flat, at the minute im staying with friends, apart from that i get paid very little but im having a ball - if you arent materliatlistic & can live on modest means then youll have a ball here - give me a shout if you want when you arrive |

the new school i started in last week has only Irish & American teachers working there - they are hoping to open up franchises all around Catalonia so cant imagine they would be doing too much illegal - i can try ask the American teachers their status this week if you want |
