I've seen a posting on, um, another jobs site for Banyan Tree Resorts in the Maldives a number of times. I'm not interested in the job at this time, however, I am wondering why they're always seeking someone. I can't imagine that many people would want to leave a sweet place like the Maldives, especially if the job is ok. Does anyone have any experience with this company or know someone who does? Why can't they find someone to work and live in a resort in the Maldives, one of the most beautiful places on earth?
Just wondering.

Please allow me to offer my completely uneducated opinion. Thomas Cook surveyed 24 popular travel destinations and the Maldives was the most expensive. The cost of living is high. The pay at the resort is most likely quite low. I went to Cuba for a two week all-inclusive holiday and it actually got quite boring after a week and a half. Living and teaching at a resort sounds like a dream, but it would get old quick. Throw in bad management and you're looking at a real bad time.
Peace

I understand that it's very expensive there, but I would guess, seeing as it is a resort, that accomodation would be taken care of? I think it says so on the job listing. I believe (some) meals are covered as well.
As for getting sick of a tropical paradise...perhaps (?). |

Shoot, I didn't notice you were in Vladivostok (sp?). You must be a hard individual. I am impressed. |

...that's why the Maldives sounds so compelling...
Paradise would get VERY DULL after a while. Of that, I am sure.
I had some students from Vladivostok in Singapore. They were excellent and promised me that they were going to continue their studies when they returned to Russia. Do you teach at the EF there? |

Most, if not all, hotel jobs in the Maldives involve a six day week, usually with ten hours a day on duty - contact hours vary
Many places offer shared accommodation and when you're already living in such a confined space this often proves too much.
Depending on the resort you work at, the guest facilities may well be off limits so the paradise lifestyle you may imagine is pretty far off the mark.
Having said that, it's certainly an experience... though I probably wouldn't opt for it again. |
