"Try to make something of yourself" is generally what good teacher's attempt to inspire in their students.

I met Benji while he was crooning on the subway to a group of middle school girls. After the little horde disembarked, Benji and I did a quick little duo-version of 2 Live Crew's "Me So Horny" for the remaining passengers, and then got talking about art, life, love, dumplings and music. He said "lots of chicks" have been begging for a signed "Benji", but what with his tour schedule and all there isn't enough time to satisfy the millions of requests.

This is where I came in.

After explaining to Benji how I'm always looking for extra work to supplement my meager income, he suggested that I start signing his name to photographs. Guess what: He offered me 250RMB an hour to do so! I'm now in the "acceptable wage zone", and it feels f-en great.

He'll make it.. As someone here said the market is definately ripe. But it doesnt mean he should make it.. Personally, after listening to the samples, I found the canned generic beats boring, and less painful to stick a lit candle in my ear..

yue liang dai biao wo de xin <月亮代表我的心> Is done by much better artists.. I dont see that one flying off the shelf..

By the way, how does this qualify for jobs in China? is he hiring dancers? Amazing what anyone can do with technology..

There was this one indian guy who was teaching with us, who was absolultely phenominal in music engineering and creative design..

Benji's got pikes and looks and knows a little Chinese.. Someone chinese marketer is sure to get his stuff promoted.. Good luck to you buddy! Let me know if you need a dancing monkey!

Good luck to this guy. He is tapping into what is obviously a huge market. He is not cheating anyone, ripping anyone off, or doing anything dishonest. If people choose to buy his records and make him rich then good on him.

There are so many opportuities here in China for foreigners that you have to wonder what the motivation could be for anyone to take offence to what this guy is doing! At least he is doing something constructive with his time here which is more than can be said for some people.

I'm now in my tweltfh year in China and whilst this by no means makes me an expert on all things China it does give me a good grounding experience wise.

I have known lots of foreigners during my time here and there is a clear distinction between those that do and those that complain.

Life can be difficult here and everyone who comes here is guaranteed to be tested. But those that want to make a go if it here can and do, and there are plenty of examples of foreigners doing just this. These are the opportunities that I am referring to and they clearly exist whether you choose to acknowledge them or not.

If you want to put your head in the sand and just attempt to bring others down to your level then that is your right, but it certainly does not justify in any legitimate way an indescriminate bagging of people who do try to make a go of things here.

I personally believe that success begets success. The more foreigners that are successful within China the easier it will become for the rest of us, as a precedent is set and a network established. It is for this reason that I feel we should support other foreigners who are making a legitimate go of it rather than get jelaous about the fact that they have achieved what we wish that we could have but realize that we never will!
