Hello all
I'm not a teacher who leaves easily and there really has to be somewhere to go TO..... but I've made the difficult decision to leave Poland after a wonderful time here and will be moving to the (FAR) south of Italy. It could be the mainland (Apulia etc), but something is pulling me to Sicily or, particularly,Sardinia. I reckon you can guess where I'm going with this....
Anyone who has taught there or lived there (in any of these places) for a spell, could you please let me know your thoughts..... what would I delight in, what would exasperate me, what would make me come back or run to the welsh hills...what should i be prepared for, what can no preparation in the world prepare me for (?!)......
obviously everyone has different tastes and reasons for being where they are, but that aside any comments will be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks. Cheers. Much appreciated. Oh, and thanks. Did I mention I'd be grateful. And stuff? |

Well.... I can't help you with Sicily, never having graced its shores, but I've worked both in Puglia and Sardinia (still do). I'm not sure what kind of things would send you headed for the hills, though, but if you tell me a little about what you're after then I can give you a proper picture of each. Generally, I've preferred Sardinia as a place to live and work because I like smaller places. Puglia (or Bari, at any rate, where I was) can offer better nightlife during the long tefl winter when Sardinia can become very quiet indeed... |

Hey I'd also look north a bit and give Naples a try. Still the south, but a thriving large city with plenty to do. I'm living here now and love it. The traffic is crazy, the shopkeepers are rude and there are regular strikes, but I still love it! Perhaps I'm crazy!
The city is also beautiful though, with a great variety of architecture reflecting the city's long past. The students so far are sweet and friendly, and very talkative! They invite me for cofee's at breaktime (which incidentally tastes fantastic)
The food is fantastic, and the wine cheap and good. For some calm (Well in the off season period anyway!) you can hop accross to Ischia or Capri for only 7 on a boat.
If you like history aswell this is defintely the place to come too, Pompeii, Capodimonte museum, countless castles and palaces, and only 1.5-2 hrs from rome by train.
Well that's my advert for the Naples city council over! But seriously the city is great, and full of life. You will NEVER get bored here, and even should you ever do so there's good transport links to other parts of Italy.
And as for the crime thing, so far so good. As long as you don't get involved in drug dealing and don't wave any digicams around in a dodgy part of town you'll be fine. |

Hey, Naples sounds pretty good.
I am planning a trip to Italy in Feb or Apr. I want to spend 2-3 months there. I was thinking Rome but would rather go somewhere cheaper. I speak spanish (live in Argentina), so hopefully I can pick up Italian in a few months. Do you have any advice (prices!) about the housing situation? Hostel, long term hotel, or apartments?
Thanks, Steve
PS. I do not plan on working so that's not an issue in my decision. |

Greetings e'one,
I'm a newbie as for as Italy is concerned but I'm offered a place in Sicily, in a town called Alcamo.
I'd be ultra grateful if anyone can give me an insight on the town (simply want to know if its dull or lively, if you can live there as a foreigner without having mafia style stares at you) and even better, if you know about Lingua Piu school there.
I do give thanks!! |
