*Note, nice to see my thread come back to life. Too bad I've moved on and only check in here once or twice a month and won't contribute any new content. Very Happy

I'm on 10K/m now, working 20 hours/week. Guess I could bump it up to 15 pretty easy, doing about another 5 hours/week.

Nice enough salary, 'bout the same as I was earning in Taiwan, for the same hours.

Can live off 5K/m, so anything above is save-able..

There is this "myth", usually screamed by angry teachers in Japan, that we are all making peanuts here.

I have several friends working hard making more than 30,000 / month, buying condos, etc.

This isn't the norm, but enough of the "China is for losers" garbage.

Even those making less are usually allowed to teach beyond the "human tape recorder / Interchange English Lite / Dancing Bear" that is common in other nearby nations.

Some of the "dancing clowns with arm hair" in Japan are jealous. Grow some marbles and try your luck in a developing country.

Many teachers in other nations (particularly Japan) seem to think ALL EFL teachers in China are poor and dreaming of buying that next Big Mac for their kids.

Most of the teachers I know (professional, qualified teachers) are making well over 20,000 RMB/month in China.

For most that's US$3000/month. Living VERY well and saving $2000/month.

So for those chuckling at teachers in China, wake up.

But most of these people aren't posting here. They are too busy working and enjoying life.

Who is doing this?

What is your problem with teachers in Japan?

It's becoming an obsession for you.

No. You are being typically foolish.

But I've heard that in Japan 320,000 Yen/month is a "good" wage.

And that's enough to make me snicker.

Get real! Who, if qualified, would work for that?! That wage...In Japan??? Yikes!

Not me.

Next!

What are YOU making, prol?

A) Prof, how much are you pulling in?

B) 20,000 is about right for a qualified teacher at an international school in China. What is the salary for the same position in Japan?

C) How many hours do they put in to earn that 20,000?

I'm doing very well.

See my 250RMB/month thread.

For the Japanese Salaries go to the Japan forum.

I'm just tired of the "poor teacher" myth.

I would go there but 250RMB/month is not worth a mouse click.

You're comparing oral English teachers in Japan with international school teachers in China, which is laughable.

If your great friends truly earn 20,000 per month at respectable international schools, I can assure you they earn far less than 250/hour (or month). Each hour of class time requires a minimum of one hour's work outside the class. I stress the word minimum.

I am sorry, Mister PRof, but you are shooting your mouth off in vain about those RMB 250 an hour gigs in the P.R. of C. - even the most qualified teachers can't be too choosey in accepting one of those because they are far and wide in between. Most schools don't need such cocksure teachocrats who know everything better than the principal and all his co-workers. The proof in the pudding is the employer loyalty of most: once you have a job that pays you so handsomely you will stay put. And that's not because you can climb on the career ladderg - that's because if you move you have to start from a much lower echelon and for lower pay.
China simply isn't the market you are crowing about; many western businessmen and retailers have been finding this out. No wonder even education isn't that good a business. CHinese can count their fens better than you can count your U.S. dollars; they wouldn't pay you so much even if they could afford it - because if they could afford you they could easily afford to emigrate and get a much better overall education in a western country.

People like prof may score 250/hour out of a desperate school. It has nothing to do with his "professionalism". Once they can find another "prof" who will accept 249.99, they will dump him.

Steppenroger, just admit you are a non-native speaker and a mill owner...thus biased.

I have many friends teacher EFL making more than 20,000 RMB/ month.

MOD EDIT

Deal with it.
