Just a few questions about life in Abu Dhabi.

Alcohol- What is the night life like? I realize the social life revolves around the hotels. Are the bars and clubs fun? How expensive is beer? What would an average night on the town cost?

Motorcycles- Do people use motorcycles a lot? How expensive is a decent motorcycle?

Gambling- Are there many casinos? Is there a community to play Texas Hold em Poker.

Thanks in advance for any information.

Tourists may benefit to know that not all casinos have licenses. Currently there are no licensed casinos present in Bahrain, Iran, Saudi, Syria, UAE, Yemen, Iraq, Jordan and Kuwait.

What's a pint cost these days? 25 dirhams? Not particularly cheap, but that depends on where you come from. The selection is often limited to Amstel Light, Newcastle, Heineken, and a few others. Most pubs only carry a few kinds on tap, and a small selection of bottled. How much will a night out cost you? Well, depends on how much you like to drink. I worked with single people who took home 7000/month, and lived paycheck to paycheck, as they drank away their salary. A person who relies on drinking a good bit will easily spend a couple hundred dirhams/night without taxi fare.

I know of informal riding groups in Dubai (a couple Harley and a couple racing bike groups) but I can't say I saw lots of people using them as their sole means of transport. It's hot, the air is thick, and it's extremely dangerous.

Can't comment on whether or not there's a formal poker community of the cost of bikes. Good luck to ya.

I suggest that if you want to drink then stay at home and invite friends. I know of some who were caught out drunk, jailed and then deported. It doesn't happen often but it has.
Gambling again you can do in the luxury of your own home.
Motorbikes are a weekend hobby - you quite often see them in Abu Dhabi in the quiet streets of the suburbs or on the highways but few people are stupid enough to risk life and limb as motorbikes are just not seen by most cars here when travelling to and from work, get a truck instead.

At least several expats have been killed over the past several years riding their motorcyles. One I remember was a hit and run at a round about. Wouldn't catch me on a bike here in UAE. Of course, these machines are dangerous wherever, IMHO (the famed Lawrence of Arabia comes to mind).

Wow, this is amazing. I knew a guy who went into the Marina Mall and never came out. They gave up looking for him after about four days.

A tragedy, indeed, bindair. Was it perhaps death by trolly? The ole achilles heal is wide open on a Friday afternoon. Many o' expats have been crippled in this manner. Any they're the lucky ones.
