PostPosted: Wed Oct 25, 2006 12:18 pm    Post subject: Anyone in Nizwa? Reply with quote

Hello all,

I have been offered a job in Nizwa through CfBT and should be heading there mid-December. Is there anyone based out there now? Can you give me an idea of what it's like? The impression I get is that there isn't much to do and the TEFL community is small.
My biggest concern is that I will get very bored very soon in the contract.

Also, how easy is it to buy a car out there and are they expensive?

Thanks

Sid

Have you don't a search? There has been quite a bit of discussion about Nizwa and life in the smaller towns of Oman.

Whether cars are expensive is a relative thing. A new car in Oman is significantly cheaper than in the US (and probably also in the UK). Used cars are plentiful and as 'iffy' as used cars anywhere - probably more so as the locals are known to abuse their cars and ignore things like maintenance. It is always best to buy from fellow expats though that may require waiting until one comes available.

Hopefully someone will come on with current info, but it is a holiday now, so many are traveling. Many people are doing long term rental/leases these days, but I don't know the details as I always purchased.

I'm new on this so getting used to using the site, but will do the search.

I have friends in Muscut so think I will see if they can help with the car buying.

Cheers

Hi Sid,

We are around 120 EFL teachers here in Nizwa, working for two MHE colleges and Nizwa University. Nizwa is a beautiful place but pretty small. We've got two hotels with pool and bar, and one decent supermarket. Most people go to Muscat for a change of scenery (90 minutes by car).

You can get a new smallish car for around 3,000-4,000 OMR, and car rentals are around 150 OMR per month (Toyota Echo).

Thanks SandyMan,

Very useful info...120 isn't bad for a small town.

Maybe I'll bump into you by the pool once I get there.

I guarantee you that you will meet him and most every other expat pretty much daily everywhere you go. Even in Muscat, one can barely walk across the street without running into someone from work. ... kind of a good news/bad news sort of thing. Laughing You just don't plan on having many major life secrets...

The Trubble is, you have been away so long that you are relying on your "American" buddies for information. WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!

They will feed you the "Bush" alternatives - you, well you are so out of it you beleive all they say.

That is the problem, you feed this info to all those on the site and quote it as gospel! DOH!!!! Wake up babe - you are being taken for a Patsey.

Yes, but what does that have to do with the thread or board or anything else one can think of?

Duffy used to actually provide useful information on this board, but he seems to be heading off in unhealthy directions.

Yes, but you defined the noun 'siege' ... whereas it was used as some sort of verbal... an adjective... and this from a supposed English teacher?
