I was just in Nizwa yesterday, albeit travelling through with my bf on our eid road trip through oman. It's a small place, quite pleasant, but quite conservative. I only saw a few women outside, all very very very covered, and lots of bearded men. However, after having spent several years in a very conservative, traditional city in Turkey, it was amazing to be in an even more conservative place and to have absolutely no harassment from the men, even when I was off on my own. Omanis are super sweet. I really enjoyed walking in the old residential part opposite the souk, and was invited into the home of several women I selam'd as I went past. I couldn't go in though, because I was with my bf and they couldn't let a strange man into the house.
The energy was of a really laid back small town- and as VS said, I doubt you could keep any secrets to yourself. That means no cocktails on the balcony after work, no public displays of affection with significant other in public'ly viewable places, and other things that might be taken the wrong way. I think it'd be a lovely place to be if married but a bit lonely if single. Great camping in the Jebel Shams mountain area near the town though. Recommended. |
